Filter Oil. How much is too much.

OK.  I admit it.  I don't spend a great deal of time maintenancing my bikes.  However, since I purchased this '04 KX-500 and have dumped all kinds of money into mods, I am committed to really taking care of this machine.  Running the best gas, clean air filters, etc...  So, I've been out on two rides and decided to replace the air filter.  Basically, I trashed the stock and purchased (3) three UNI air filters.  I got a tip from a guy a long time ago and he cleans and oils (3) three filters at a time and puts the other (2) two in zip lock baggies.  Makes sense since it is a messy job.  So, like I said, I don't do this much and typically rely on directions to get through these things.  So I oil up the filter and wring out the excess oil.  I'm using UNI oil.  Makes sense I guess since I bought UNI filters.  Anyways, the UNI oil was pretty thick and while I was lightly ringing out the oil, it wasn't like running and dripping off of the filter.  I mean, this oil was pretty thick.  So I removed what I felt was the "excess" oil and installed the filter in my bike.  The next day, I go out into my garage and there's a huge puddle of oil underneath my air box.

What gives?  I mean I don't think I could have wringed out any more oil off that filter.  Obviously there was too much oil on the filter.  Any ideas?  I'm all thumbs when it comes to this stuff.

That is exactly why I switch to PJ1 spray on filter oil.

I oil only one filter at a time (but clean all five at one time), and make sure I spray both the inside and outside of the filter.  Then I toss the filter in a plastic bag and start squishing.  After about 60 seconds, remove the filter and you will notice the oil has been evenly spread over the filter.  Grease the sealing edge and install.

With the spray on filter oil, it's tough to oil too much.  Also, some of the National Hare & Hound races are the dustiest races you will ever ride, with lots of folks getting dirt in their motors.  However, in all the races over the years, I have never had dirt get through my filter into the air box.

Switch to spray on oil and solve the problem forever.

Like Rick said,I only oil the filter Im useing and have some clean ones ready, will reoil it if its sat more than a couple weeks.I like Maxima pour on,and you dont want to "WRING" a filter.Im sure theres guys that do,but it tears the foam, the seams and the glue.I work out the extra or work oil into the filter between my finger tips,or go to the spray on like Rick.

I run the Yamaha filter oil.  You pour it on, and squeeze it in thoroughly.  I then wrap it in a paper towel and squeeze again to remove excess.  It is always has uniform coverage.  This stuff dries TACKY!  Never drips after its on.  The spray on sounds good.  Never tried it.

Yeah..  I remember using spray on when I serviced my filters on my 4 stroke.  Never had the problem I had here with the pour on oil.  I think I'll move over to the spray on.  Thanks Guys !!
