Hello.
Here is some measurements fro an 86 KX500 Shock.
Obviously the spring info can change depending on adjustment and rates, ect:
All dimensions are approximate:
Spring thickness: 12MM OD -
Spring Diameter: 88MM -
Spring length as mounted: 267MM -
Upper mount tab thickness: 32MM -
Upper mount tab hole ID: 12MM -
Lower Mount Internal Width: 26.5MM -
Lower mount hole ID: 10MM -
Eye to Eye: 420MM
Before you buy a 125 shock, simply compare the measurements.
Also, a 125 shock will almost certainly have different internal dampening, rebound, and spring size.
The four stroke engine: That's one stroke for producing power and three for wearing the engine out.

an 86 kx125 shock is totally different. it basically looks like normal shock with resevoir attached. your 86 500 has remote resevoir. what would interchange is 85 125, 85-86 250, 500. but the 86 is the nicest. bigger shaft, better vlaving, etc.
you can use the pre load/ lock ring and spring mount though from 86-87 125, or 87 250/ 500 on your 86.

i am currently putting my 86 500 back together. my shock was supposed to be for the dumpster. hammered, very very rough. jeremy wilkey at mx tech has done a bunch of my old bikes, he just got thru making this 86 stuff right.
there are definatly limitaions inside this shock, the 88 up stuff much nicer, but he did a great job with what he had. hope to eventually find a wp or ohlins for this bike. you might give him a call, can definatly make it right for you.
you can buy the upper shock bearing from all balls, the lower from kawasaki surprisingly.

on rebuilding it is just like any other. you can still get all the parts you need. think all balls make the seal head assembly and stuff. i originally did mine myself, but ended up sending to mx-tech to get the valving right. mx-tech sent me a new spring from eibach, and a bumper that i couldn't seem to find. if all else look on race techs site, they should have a listing for stuff they sell. i think my bladder is from them.
