1984 kx250
« on: May 04, 2010, 03:07:41 AM »
My buddy is looking into a 1984 kx250 he found for $300.  The top end might need to be rebuilt along with some other minor stuff (clean carb, etc).  I was looking for parts for a bike this old and the only place i found a piston for it was on Bikebandit.com.  Does anyone know if they still make parts for bikes this old?  I was also looking at a 1980 kx80 to fix but i have the same issue.

At my local dealers website they did not have anything listed for 1984 under the parts diagrams with the part numbers and all. I found a site that had the parts diagram for it but it said the piston was a discontinued item. If they don't make pistons for it/other parts, are there new aftermarket parts that can be used as replacements for the old original parts anyone knows of?  Can any of the pistons out of some of the newer kx250s be used in the cylinder from that year?  I would hate to see my friend buy a bike to fix it if you can't get parts to actually fix it.  Your thoughts will be most appreciated. is it even a good idea to buy a bike that old?  he's only looking for something to ride through the trails in his woods and on his farm.

Thanks

wiseco makes piston kits.

He will have a hell of a time finding parts since most of them are discontinued. I bought one for $300 and parted it out and put the motor in a 3 wheeler for a couple years till 3rd gear locked up. I still have the bottom end and forks (with bad caps).

You can use cylinders and heads off Tecate 3 1984-85. The 1983-84 KX top end is the only one that will work. There are some new parts that will fit like a V-force reed cage. Some people make reproduction intake boots and chain slide for the 3 wheeler which fit. Only general parts like bearings or generic parts like silencers can be made to fit.

Just cause a website has a parts diagram doesnt mean they exist.

very true about the parts diagrams. I've encountered that problem with my '93 for some parts.

Thanks for the advice. I think i will tell him to stay away from it.  If parts are hard to come by now, it will just get harder as time goes on.

Thanks

I have found on bikebandit at least, if in the parts list they list a price you can usually get the part. If it is unavailable they usually remove the part or the price from the list. I have always owned older bikes, currently have a 1988 KX125.

whereabouts is the 84 KX250 for sale?

One could consider buying it and parting it out. They are worth more in parts and the time and money spent on an old one often leads to the revelation one should have just spent a little extra for something newer.

Nightmare Racing also makes very nice reproduction plastics for the 84 KX.
A couple of 03 and 04 KXs, a few YZs, 3 PE 400s, a DR and a TS.
