To do, or Not to do Need advice from those that have done it!
« on: November 20, 2013, 05:56:56 AM »
I have a 93 500 that I have done a complete tear down on.  Everything has been powdercoated piston window mod re plate etc..  All I have left is to re assemble.
I just sold my cr500 so I now have time and $$ for my kx.  My questions are:

I would like a nice super moto for mountain roads and trails only, I do not plan on commuting, interstate travel etc..  Is the 500 a good choice for this or does it just become not quite good on the street and not good on trail either?

If it is a good candidate:
What is the range on a stock tank riding modestly?
Does it need to be jetted richer and if so by how much, one size up on the main, needle?
Put street trail tires on stock wheels or go 17's?

Any input would be greatly appreciated, I am planning on using this thing, if I build it, for something you would use a dr400 for- but i have a kx500 just waiting so I just really need to know if I should build it super moto (street legal) or just build it stock and sell it and buy a dual sport.

Well for me I have trails all over near my house, I'll ride on the street for maybe 5-10mins before I hit trails. I'll go through sand pits, dirt roads, jump from friend's houses. For what I do it's great! Did you ask yourself what a DR400 could do that a KX500 cant? :?

You guys are making the decision harder! A 4 poke duel sport would be fun to lug around on but I am afraid I will be wanting to power wheelie out of curves and really rip up the pavement sometimes.  But it has been my experience that fast bikes tend to sit more than the fun little pokers my 70's and 50's tend to get ridden a lot. Went to the dmv today (Tennessee) about the kx, I have to show receipts for all street legal equipment and then they will send it to the state, a 75 $ inspection later and they might approve it. I know it is not the most logical bike to build but it would be hell of fun and the resale value would prob be good if I wanted to change.  I will def be getting one of those killer charging systems.

If you get it converted so you can ride a bit on the street, the first thing you will notice is that the rear end likes to do crazy stuff.
The second thing you will notice is that you are really wearing out your rear tire fast.
The third thing you will notice is that rear tires and tickets are expensive.
Other then those minor nuisance I say go for it.
I sure love mine.

Is 70 - 100 miles to far on the street?
