rear tire came off. K5
« on: April 12, 2010, 01:50:27 PM »
We finally got the 92 kx 500 together after complete rebuild. bike started in 3 kicks. anyways we went out riding on sunday for the first time at a local gravel pit and i noticed while i was behind him that his rear tire had started to come off the rim so we let some air out and pushed the bead back in the rim put some air in it and off we went. about ten mins later the same side of the tire came off the rim except half was left on due to the rim lock. any one have any idea what is going on? rim is in good shape no dings flat spots or bent ect,

what tire pressure you running ??
Maybe the tire bead is damaged and or stretched...
ususaly takes me a good 40 psi from a strong air compressor to properly seat the bead on the rim, how are you doing it ?
is one side of tire bead not under the rim lock ?
does the big 5 hunge just have too much tire shredding horsepower ???
hope one of these helps....Good Luck

Would it be possible the Prev owner put an 18" rim on that puppy and only one side of the 19" tire is caught by the rimlock?
The bike looks great, sounds like it runs good too.

This has happened to me.  Likely the bead's broken. Nothing you can do to keep that tire on the rim when that happens.  New tire needed.  A bummer but at least it's a straightforward fix!

I pulled the tire off and got my hand stuck by the cable in the tire. never broke one before putting one on and i never heard it pop. i guess thats what you get when you pay $84.00 bucks for the " combo set of tires" from motosport.com lol. front tire went on great no probs but guess im getting a new rear tire. thanks for the help guys. oh also i thought that too about having a 18 inch rear rim on it. i always thought that older bikes ran a 18 on the rear. i know the cr500 run a 18 in back. never knew a k5 had 19s. once again thanks for the tips guys  :-)

I have run a few artrax tires from motosport on a number of bikes including my 500 and they are the best bang for the buck. Would I rather shred a $80 tire or a $50 tire?  Either way, the tire is getting shredded.

As a rule of thumb, if a rear tire for a KX500 is going on "easy" your putting a 19" tire on a 18" rim !!!  LOL   the rim size on Excel wheels will be stamped to the inside of the wheel. It should read  2.15X19  if the wheel is post 1989. It is very common for desert and woods guys to swap to an 18" wheel.

glad you figured it out. on my 97 K5 i put an 18 on it there's more side wall flex,i run a maxxis SI 120/100x18 at 5.0 PSI. these tires work great in soft areas and seem to wear well  also use a kenda washougal sticky 90/100x21 at 5.0 PSI  rim locks and heavy duty tubes is a must. I think the last set cost $110.00 shipped
