KX 500 Jetting
« on: February 24, 2003, 05:18:07 PM »
Hey, I was wondering what type of jetting I should run with my KX500..

I have a 1990 KX 500, Eric Gorr 520cc big bore ported for top end, sea level, with pump gas. Um, stock pipe, FMF silencer, stock reeds, stock filter. What would you guys recommend running? Thanks..

Follow the chart at the main page it should get you real close.Since you have the big bore kit I would stay 1 or 2 sizes richer than the chart to start
Pay close attention to the air screw.I had a a major screw up on mine by setting it 4 turns out,( I set it twice and thought it was once DUUUUUU!!!)
bike ran like junk untill I figured it out!!! Also if you have it set up for top end I would stay a little on the rich side on the main,if you are doing alot of top speed running. How is the 520 kit compared to stock??? better power down low?? does it pull harder ??What about the hit is it better or worse than stock? I am always looking for a little more grunt down low as I ride mostly woods thanks Ray

Thanks for the info, I'll try it..

As to the diffrence, it hits extremely hard in the mid-top end, like way too hard, I should have never done that port job as I was expecting a little more not a cr500X2 hit. But, it didn't lose very much down low, infact, I have not even noticed a loss in the low, but I did purchase a Gnarly pipe and a flywheel weight if I want a bit more low-end. If you like hit, I recommend this kit.. I also sent off a head I got off Ebay for race gas, a high compression head for racing and gasket. It's soo m uch better, hardder hit and more low-end. But, from my friend who has the same Big bore kit, with a low grunt package port job, it's much better with just as much top-end as stock. Just more low end. I dumped the 19inch rim for a 18 inch, I am only running a 110/100 tire. But it hooks good enough, I run mainly wide open, with is now a fear I have. .:-) It's too fast up high. I like the stock pipe so far, from the Fatty vs. Gnarly vs. PC plat. I know they make a dune pipe, but I honestly think the stock is just as good. I really like my KX, but it is worthless in the woods, I just change the sproket, throw in the flywheel weight and I hit the woods, but it is still too powerful. It's worthless at the track, as hitting the powerband is suicide in short runs. All in all, I love the power. Just after owning 500s for about 5 years now, it is still deadly fast and too powerful to me, it makes my cr500 feel kinda weak. :-/ go figure. I really recommend Eric Gorr in any big bores/port jobs. He does great work at a awesome price. I believe I paid $400 total for the package, (piston kit, gaskets, big bore, port, head work, ect. ect.), I did have the bottom end redone totally by him just incase. :-) So, I'm happy with it. Just not my everyday ride.

Thanks again for the info, I am going to jet it when I get off work tonight and hopefully it will run better, (quit smoking)..
