A few tranny questions
« on: November 19, 2010, 08:14:59 PM »
Well, I was looking at my '89 roadrace KX supermono project and noticed the output shaft has the sprocket welded to it... :x
Did a search but not quite clear on what I can swap. I don't mind buying a whole tranny if I have to. Found a few on ebay but they are '84, '87 etc.
- Can I swap the '89 for a whole '87 setup?
- Are the gear ratios different?
- What are the main differences aside from the nut instead of the C-clip? (the '89 has a C-clip, right?)
- Anything else I should know before I make the swap (if it is doable)

Thanks
Richard

How good is the weld?  Any chance you could cut/grind the welds with a dremel or other small grinder.  You would have to cut the shaft anyway to get it out of the cases so nothing lost if it doesn't work.  Does the 89 have the circlip groove?  Cam.

I wouldn't screw with your tranny, if they welded on the shaft I'm sure that the metallurgy is screwed up. 1988 used a clip, stay away from those that use a nut on the sprocket, i've heard that you can't get the nuts anymore. Newer would be better, some used trannys had the drive cogs rounded causing them to jump out of gear. not only are the shafts different the clutches (clutch splines, some had 5 springs the newer had 6) are different in the 87 and older, can't remember if 88 is same or newer.  Have you thought about replacing the shaft?

The guy that welded the sprocket on probably just put a fillet weld at the corner of the sprocket and shaft.  Kinda of a topical weld job.  I'd be concerned with metallurgy if the sprocket and shaft was weld prepped and bevelled prior to welding, hence a lot more weld affected area.

I'm with KXcam, try to grind the weld using a bit of finesse.

Thanks for the answers, the weld is a W-E-L-D!! There was no finesse used on this one, you can't even see the end of the shaft anymore. Guess I'm screwed, will have to find a new shaft.

Does anyone here have an output shaft fo sale?

Thanks
