1987 KX500 Exhaust????
« on: January 30, 2010, 02:29:56 AM »
Hey Guys, Yesterday I scored a deal on a 1987 KX500. It has a pro circuit exhaust with a FMF silencer. I looked up the FMF exhaust to match they only list one for the 88-04, but then went to Pro Circuit and they list theres as 86-87 and 89-04. Would I be able to make the 88 exhaust from FMF work or are they totally different? I'm interested in the FMF because I get a great deal on them. Thanks.

Hey thanks for the info. What are some up grades you recommend for the 87'? I just got this bike and it's my first 500. Any help would be great. Thanks Again.

well the first thing i did was i cleaned and shimmed the power valves so they dont over rotate. if its piped you want to check the jetting and the reeds. if all thats right on it should pull hard.

The 88-04 pipe will work on the 87 500 with a few little mods. First the section of the pipe that connects to the silencer is shorter on the 88-04 pipes than the 87 pipe. I made a sleeve out of sheet metal to make up the difference. Next this same section is not curved like the 87 500 pipe. If you'll look at the 88-04 sub frame you'll see that the pipe goes through the sub frame and on 87 500's the pipe goes out side the sub frame. To fix this you will need to shim out the rear pipe mount (located near the kick starter). I ran the 87 power core FMF silencer with an 88-04 gnarly pipe. Maybe someone can provide you some pictures of the 88-04 pipe and you can compare your 87 pipe to the newer ones. Also with the 88-04 pipe the front fender will rub the pipe and melt just about 1/8 off the fender. I switched to an 89 front end to resolve this plus the 89 front has much better forks. They just don't bolt right on.
