KX250 and KX500 Owners
« on: February 14, 2010, 10:41:30 AM »
I have a slightly built 92 KX500. I have been on this bike for ~8years. This week I purchased a 2000 KX250 for fun on the tight and technical stuff. It needed a new top end, so I did this, and broke it in.

Went for a ride with my buddies and found that the bike is fast on the top end, but has very little low and some mid power.

I don't have much to compare it to, since most of my time is spent on the 500. In riding the 500, I can run a gear high, and just power out of the corners. The 250 has to have a lot more rpm to fly out of the corners. It does fly out, but just requires a lot more effort.

Even just starting out. I can just idle in first gear to get going on the 500, but the 250 seems like I need to wrap it out.

Is this your experience owning both the 500 and 250? I guess I didn't expect the 250 to feel this under powered.

Thanks,

Darin

It shouldn't be that much different. The 250 is a big step down off the 500 as far as power but it should still get up and go off the line. First thing I would do is start tweaking the jetting and see if that helps. I'm guessing it's probably a little rich on bottom end and that's why you have to wrap it out to get going. Just keep an eye on the spark plug and make sure it's not running too lean or rich as you tweak it. My 250 tractors a bit when taking off. Almost like the 500 will. I also have high compression piston in it though. Hope this helps.
It's hard to keep a drivers license riding a 2 stroke dirt bike on the street.  If you drive within the law they are VERY boring.

I would look at the jetting chart. Compare that to your pipe mfg recommendations, if you have an aftermarket pipe. FMF and Pro Circuit both have charts to look at. Gearing choice is big. I run mine at 13-47 or 49 to race. The clutch timing is more critical on the 250 also. I went the other direction and had the 250 first, then got the 500. The 500 you can just spin the throttle around and it throws roost. The 250, you have to throttle then wack the clutch. Try to burn the clutch up. Then it will fly.
I would be lookin at the needle's clip position first.
