"Taking the Dirty 5 to the Road ?"
« on: September 05, 2009, 11:28:08 AM »
Looking to make the K5 road legal, legal requirements aside what are the Pro's and Con's of making a KX500 road legal please ?

Like how many miles to the gallon can be had from a bog standard KX500 at a highway cruising speed of 100 Km/hr ?

Will mixing in the 300mls or so of oil per tank while the petrol is going in be sufficient enough to mix satisfactory ?

Cheers

i,m running a plated k5 on the streets for 2,5 years now,
there,s a few do,s and don,t s to it .
do,s :
keep pre-mix ratio around 1:40
tune the carb for a somewhat richer mixture esp. for road use
don,t s
don,t cruise on the highway with a k5 ,its because a dirtbike motor that is not designed for it .
esp. a k5 motor has to have a pull all the way up till 5th gear
its like on off on off with the throttle in order to let the motor pull at all times .

i get like 22 mile out of one gallon,stock k5 tank is 3,9 ?

ow and my k5 is not dirty  this one,s never seen a drop of rain

All very interesting thanks - whats the maximum amount of time a K5 can be at full throttle for ?

Wouldn't those K5 boys that did the Baja etc be at full throttle for miles ? No what you are saying as mate was not the happiest when I pinned his kx250 wide open over only a couple of hundred meters on about 4 runs (he was running it in some-what too :)) Is it something to do with lubrication requirements ? Heat ?

in my case ,on the road, with almost zero rollingresistance,
14/44 ratio
i tend to peak rpm in 5 th for like 5 sec or so.
then i pull the clutch, let it roll to slow down,
meanwhile give it some lub by revin the motor a bit.

in the baja sand the rollingresistance is very high.
if you run the k5 wot in this sand it has to pull pretty hard,
this is exact where it,s made for ,pull pull pull ,no harm done

of course gearing plays a big part in this ,
if you gear it like 15/36 then even on the road you can peak longer ,
because the engine has to work harder then with 13/51 f.e.

I heard somewhere. That the team green boys had a choke lever on the bars to "adjust" as they held it wot for long periods to lubricate it a bit

I know in the old days of ticklers instead of chokes here in desert racing we would reach down every so oftenand tickle it to lube her up again always fun at near 100mph in a sand wash with 4" of suspension travel
