how to street legal a kx in pa
« on: August 12, 2009, 03:50:39 PM »
I'm thinking about fitting my kx250 in sm trim. I have 2 questions. How do i street legalize this thing in pa (it has an arizona title, when i moved back to pa i never changed it. I even have a lic plate for it, says rv on it.)

I know i need headlight kit, dot tires, tailight, turnsignals, mirror or mirrors, horn, but what i don't know is the process through the dmv.

I'm concerned with the 2 areas of the title that i have posted in the pics. Does this make my bike ineligable in pa since it was previously titled in pa as offroad. I looked on the pa dmv website and it says they do not register offroad vehicles for road use. so what should i do, go to the dmv and play dumb?

The problem with the title is that it already says orv on it. In pa., if you had the original certificate of origin, it is possible to street title the bike. I know a few guys that did it. They had to meet all of the street legal requirements for pa. Then take it to a mechanic who has inspection certification and have them sign off on it stating that it meets all of the street legal requirements for pa. There is probably more to it than that though. Paper work from the DMV etc. You can get a pa orv plate I believe, I dont know if that would fly on the street if a cop were to notice it.

ok so heres what i have been looking at for the better part of the last hour. http://www.chicagowatermark.com/CO.html

seem like they could make an mso for a new bike. Well if i was to build this bike by myself with some funky parts... oh lets say a kx500 engine, supermoto rims and tires, catch can new front fender, oversized front brake then it would not be original and maybe i could use this company for the mso,

go to the inspection place and maybe be in business! out of this site what form looks like i could use?http://www.dmv.state.pa.us/forms/index.shtml#titling if you get the question right you get a mint 2004 kx500, opps i mean a cookie!

if these don't work i'll just chop the frame and use a peice from a klx frame spliced in (franken kx) just like flava flav says " yeah boooooooooooooooooy" lol!!!

i have a buddy in kansas maybe i could do all the mod work and then sell or gift it to him he gets it registered there then he gifts or sells it back to me with the road legal title? i think this option would work the easiest but the transport and trip to kansas  would be long and unpleasant.

here's another link i found in a thread over at www.supermotojunkies.com. http://www.amadirectlink.com/legisltn/laws.asp.  this list all states road legal and offroad regulations and requirements .my next step is to stop down the street and talk to the local  cycle inspection guy.

i went on progressives website and was able to produce a quote using my bikes vin#. i was pretty suprised. so then i called them and the guy says that as long as it doesn't cause trouble with the state, then it is fine by their company.

so...

1.) modify to meet requirements
2.) get insurance
3.) get inspection
4.) apply for special construction title, not sure how to get past the title i have now, maybe after i do the work to convert it will be a non issue with the dmv?

I've had to re-title a car before. It was one of thoes deal where it had been sold several time without anyone going to the DMV, and the title had been lost. Basicly I had to get some paperwork from them, fill it out and have a local cop inspect the vehicle to make sure it was still legal (it happend to be a dune buggy).

My guess is, after you do the work to convert it to a dual sport (or super moto) having a cop inspect it will give them no reason to deny you plates.

Have you called anyone at the DMV? Wouldn't hurt.

If you decide on a 500, I have a 02 500 frame with a NJ street title that I may part with.

BDI how did you power your Soltek?  Been looking to get a E-line set up only to find out that it is out of production.  Post a picture of your light set up I'd like to see how it looks.
