well for me i had to get a race licence for the pnwma but find out who does all the races in your area call your local shop and after that its all about bike setup, i run a 100.120/18 maxxis desert it with 6-8 psi and a mitas sand tire on the front with 13 psi barkbusters are a mustand for gearing i run a 14/50 and it works fine but if your destry abbott fast run 13/48
in thee begining man become of the dirt and in thee end he shall return to the dirt in the mean time we shall give him a kx500 and the dirt shall be his play ground

Here in the midwest, at the amatuer level, its purchase a ama card. $39 good for one year, and you have to have a District Card. That is a card that records your season point standing in that Card's District. Here they are $20 and also good for the season. Then they get you again at the gate, then again to race each event. 1st race costs the most.
All of the races that I attend, have the appropriate paperwork on hand for a new guy to show-up and then race. With the Ama Card purchase, you will receive "American Motorcyclist " magazine, as one of the few benefits, which gives you event schedules for all AMA sanctioned events. The district card here, not sure if everywhere, sends us schedules for our Districts (area).
I would say, find the race to bust your berry on, and contact that Club. They are usually excited about their upcoming event and full of information about the race and the "rules."  With quotes, because different clubs "interpret"  the rules differently. Its not a hassle at all, though, like I may be making it sound like. You just don't want to dedicate a weekend to racing and find that your bike needs a killswitch or something. The biggest work is getting the bike ready and every spare part in the truck. Hillclimbing is a blast too...

www.ecea.org. More harescrambles and events than you can shake a stick at in your area. You will need a AMA card and possibly a district card of some sort. I believe you are in district 6. Where in Maryland are you. There is another member here that races harescrambles from the maryland/pa area. wecsubloc is his name here.

Theres a club that puts on a enduro in Shippensburg. South Penn Enduro Riders. I believe they put on a harescrambles also. Just up 81 from you. The other member I mentioned lives around you also. I live in Southern NJ but pretty much do all of the enduros in the ECEA.
