250f or 450f?
« on: July 23, 2009, 07:25:42 AM »
So i been riding a KX 125 for a while now... and well i think i've out grown it... time to move it up. Quite Honestly i was afraid of 250's for a while.  Mainly because of the Horror stories i hear... and have heard.  The stories of people riding and the injury list they sustain in one accident... and its ALWAYS a LIST!  So it kinda spooked me on them.

Then i finally got the opportunity to take a 250 (two stroke) for a boot... started light... and then my usual self kicked in and all hell broke loose!  I rolled in from my test ride to the gang and yelled, "What the HELL have i been worried about all this time! I think its time to step it up a notch." I told the gang i could handle these things no prob... they are less experienced... and daring then me.

But i also told them, i think the spook WAS just the stories... yes the stories were REAL.  But i bet its because all those folks watched WAAAY too much FMX on TV then went out and straight to a 250.  And a beginner on a 250... not a good combo. But we started small... got our experience, and have now grown into the bigger bikes.  and thanks to those beginners on 250 and the fact that they scared the crap outta themselves.... i get a deal! hee hee

So the question to you!... oh! i like to ride track.... if i were to go for a four stroke from the 125... what is the way to go? 250f or 450f?  What is actually closer to the 250 two stroke step up?

Sorry... got a little carried away on the explanation.

Early on 125 2 stroke = 250 4stroke and 250 2 stroke +450 4stroke....  Give or take. It is differant in the power delivery. I would buy a 450 and learn to use the variable power knob on the right.  :-D

Neither are very close. 250f is a rev monster. 450f has a bit more power, more torque, is smoother, but weighs a bit more. There is no real 4 stroke equivalent to a 250 2 stroke.

my 07 kx450 had a 250 like pwerband, just a bit more and it hooked up better. the 09 450 is way smooth almost to the point of feeling a bit short on power, not so, it pulls from nothing to forever.

I've also got a 06 250 2t, I don't like it, for a trail bike I like the 250f, I've had 5 250f's and loved them all, I don't currently have one but as soon as I get rid of something I'm going to get another just a fun bike, and they have good power, not hillclimbers but they'll pull you around up some pretty steep stuff.

bottom line, personal preference, you won't go wrong with either.
