Wheels that fit?
« on: July 16, 2009, 03:56:55 AM »
Ive noticed that spoke kits cost 50-80 bucks. An entire used wheel on ebay can be had for about the same price. I am thinking that would probably be the better route for me since its the same price, I end up with spare hardware, and I dont have to lace / true the thing.
What all different complete wheels will fit though? from other models and year ranges? having more to shop for than just KX500 wheels will open things up a bit.

As for what is wrong with mine, some of them the actual spoke spins when I turn the nipple. A few have a slight bend in em. I managed to get all of them tight enough that they make atleast some ping when they are hit, but they are going to have to be replaced at some point. Ive been told I shouldn't bother to replace individual spokes.

The last rear wheel (K5) I bought on e- bay cost me $248.  I bought a brand new take off from a KX450F some guy was doing a super moto to it. Never used, new tire, sprocket, brake disk for $400.  It was for the KX500AF.  KX500 rear wheels 1997 thru 2004 have 3 bearings in the hub, 2 on the sprocket/drive side.  50 to 80 bucks sounds very cheap.  Ask all the correct questions.  At that price they either don't know what it's worth or it's not worth buying.

I've bought alot of wheels off ebay, and when I buy them I intend to replace the bearings and spokes, usually I have a rim ready to install with new spokes and all I really want is the hub. A wheel that is only $80 is probably only worth $80, you'll probably have to get new spokes and bearings. The new DNA wheels look promising, less than $600 for a complete front and rear, they appear to be Talon copies. If you didn't want an extra wheel, I'd fix the one you have, you'll probably be money ahead. I watch for wheels and haven't seen anything you'd be interested in for $80

Well, if a spoke is spinning in the hub, does that mean the hub is bad? The bases of them are square right? so wouldn't the aluminum hub probably be wallowed out? The actual rims do look good and everything had grease on it when I took it apart. Just have spoke issues.

I've had the spoke nipple seizure issue as well, they are not square but are angled, and will spin. best is to get a new spoke set and relace it.
