9 Spokes Longer Than The Rest!
« on: June 12, 2009, 01:02:47 PM »
Recently laced a "08" KX450F (KX500AF) new rear hub to a new Excel rim and using new Excel spokes which are non-shouldered and slightly bigger. The first time I tried it some of the spokes were to short and some to long. 9 spokes were too long to be exact. At first I thought this was a problem and called the company that I had purchased the rim and spoke kit from but they didn't have a clue other than to say that I had maybe screwed up the lacing pattern. I have laced many rims and the pattern was correct. What I discovered upon closer hub inspection was that indeed the inside spokes on the brake rotor side require a slightly longer spoke (about a 1/4"). My "05" RMZ450, "07" RM250 and my son's "04" CRF250R all use the same size spokes on both sides of the hub. Friggin Kawasaki! Anyway I hope this post will help someone else someday

for what its worth-
we lace rims dailey-
and a lot of OEM rear wheels have inside /outside spokes of different lenghts.

certainly the Honda CR and CRF line up..
(your sons CRF250R  has different length rear spokes,, the front spokes however are same lenght )

so to anyone ,before lacing or ordering spokes be sure and check..
its fairly common practice to have different lenghts inside verse outside.

That's why when I tear down a wheel I lay the old spokes out in order from left to right. Then when I rebuild the wheel I can compare the new spokes to the old spokes for length and make sure all the new spoke go in the right holes.
