Miles per gallon
« on: May 09, 2009, 02:11:47 PM »
I did a real world test on gas mileage.  I went 39.7 miles, so 40 miles (64.37km).  I used 1.7 gallons of gas (6.43 litres).  That comes out to 23.5 miles per gallon (10.01km per litre).  Half of the ride was on the interstate,  I don't hold the bike at a steady pace, I run 65 to 74 mph (104.6km to 119.09km) .  Top speed was 81.2 at one point (130.6km).  Must have been on the close circuit part of the ride.  The other half was secondary roads.   About 40 miles per hour (64.37km per hour).  I don't remember what jet I have in the carb.  Stock chain and sprockets.  FMF Gnarly pipe and a Power Core 2 that should be repacked.  Reed spacer with stock reeds.  110 octane race fuel @ 40 to 1 gas/oil mix.  I usually mix 50/50 110 octane race fuel with 91 octane pump gas.
That should give me a 70/80 miles range per tank (112.6/128.7km).

OK, Dutchie, how do you like the conversions??  Correct Euro spelling for liters??
Man, the conversions made my brain hurt.

Picture shows the gas usage, from full, 40 miles (64.37km).

Wow. 1.7 gal in 40 miles. That means that my KX500AF is also a "daul sport bike"....You ride the first 40 miles and walk the next 40 back home! :-D

i wondered if the lower motor rpm at a given speed   say 55 mph would riase the milage a lot on a 2 stroke

i know on a sled motor, running 800 rpm higher then peak power you will use double the fuel.

I would think that on a 2-stroke there will be a "sweet" spot where the pipe and porting start working most effciently together to give best mileage.  I streeted a 2cyl RD350 Yamaha for a few years.  Never got much better than 25 MPG (Canadian gallons).  You could tell the sweet spot by the sound and feel. My fireblade gets 50mpg around town (mostly since it too difficult to ride it hard). It has one huge sweet spot. Cam.

I would think for street riding a Gnarly pipe would be the least preferred.  The PC pipe alone could make a noticable difference.  You're turning pretty good rpm to be running at those speeds (+60mph).  A wider ratio trans will curtainly yield better mpg for this application.

For trail riding both my 500s get 30mpg.  That's basically what I consider the max mpg of these bikes to be.  Riden at low rpm and coasting the down hills of the Pacific North West with the engine shut off.  I frequently ride 60 mile single track loops with the OEM two gallon tanks.  My three gallon Clarke tank will feed my CR for 90 miles of a 100 mile off road ride under the same conditions.

What I think is ironic is my RC51, a V-Twin Superbike (2x 500cc cylinders) also gets 30mpg.

IMS tank.  Yes, on the PC over the Gnarly for the street.  I made this bike into a dual sport off road bike.  I only ride the street on special occasions and between trail heads.

3.6 gal.  I bought it back in 2004,  if you want one now it's a 4 to 6 week back order.  They must be making them as needed.  $275 now, I think I paid $220.

In holland we say that the K5 in this case rides 1 to 10. On 1 litre you can ride 10 km. If you say it in englische, it does't
sound right. Like most of dutch things. You say thirty one, we say literally one thirty in dutch. So its perfect to read overseas :-D :-D
And I have calculated your conversions over, and the are OK?!!!!!!

Thanks for converting it to euro language
