1991 kx500
« on: April 15, 2009, 09:32:55 AM »
i just recently bought a 1991 kx500 from the original owner. before i got it he completely went through the entire motor and it is really fresh. bike runs great and i live in the souther california and ride alot of dezert. i bought it as a practice bike because i use my 450x for racing ( i have always wanted a kx500 and have always had a kawi since i was 5 im 18 now). just wanting to know if i should keep an eye out for anything, since i havent had a 2stroke in awhile. my gearing is 15/49 and i am gonna change it to a 47 in the rear. and also there is oil leaking from countershaft sprocket when left leaning to that side. the owner said it has alway done it just tranny oil. i mixed it 36:1 my first ride and will probly go towards 38 or 40:1 next time. so are the really bulletproof and i would like to get an exhaust to bump up the topend any recomendations it has a procircuit on it right now. and what jetting do you recomend for dove springs and kennedy meadows area thanks. :-D

Gnarly is the name FMF gives to the pipes they make out of the thicker metal . I think they are made out of .015 thick and the others are .010
Yep, you can ride it - if YOU can start it !!

Quoted from FMF's web site:

"Gnarly
The FMF Gnarly pipe focuses on increasing the lower RPM horsepower and torque to get you out of the toughest terrain. When looking to add 4-stroke tractor like torque to your 2-stroke and you need a pipe to withstand the harsh elements, this is the pipe for you.

Nickel plating is an FMF trademark and has been ?copied? by everyone making it the most imitated expansion chamber in the world.
Super strong 18 gauge steel construction makes it GNARLY!"

18 gauge steel is .048
