Gas Tank/Reed valve
« on: April 12, 2009, 06:35:24 AM »
I want to replace the stock black 2.6 gal gas tank on my 04 KX 500. I've seen a picture of a 2.0 gal 1987 KX 250 gas tank. The mounting screws to the radiator shroud look identical to my 04 500, and it appears it would fit. Anybody know if the 1987 tank would fit? Additionally I added the Delta 2 Reed valve and Moose reed spacer. That was a very good addition it really helped the powerband. One note, I had to file the inside of the Moose aluminum spacer for the Delta reed to fit. Once that was done it slid in with no issues, it also made my KX much easier to start.

The 87 is a totally different tank/shroud combo. The tank that I think you are talking about is the 89 KX250 tank, which is a direct bolt on to any 500 from 88 to 04. The 88 250 uses the same tank as the 500, in 89, they made the 250 tank smaller by basically reshaping the upper half of the tank.
A couple of 03 and 04 KXs, a few YZs, 3 PE 400s, a DR and a TS.

Yes,
The 89 Kx250 is the only tank that is smaller & that fits (it's what I have on my K5). I have a spare 89 tank if you are interested PM me & I will get you some pics. Keep in mind it does carry less fuel, if you don't go on long rides or just Moto it will not be a concern & it does allow you to get further up on the front of the bike.
