Air filter in washing machine
« on: October 28, 2003, 07:25:14 AM »
Being the inventive person I am  , I decided to wash my air filters (2x125, 1x85, 2x500) in the household washing machine. The idea seemed good at the time 8) . To my surprise, the KX85 original filter and one of the KX500 aftermarket filters fell apart during the ?White Wash? program. They came apart at the seams. There aren?t any seams as such, they are glued together. Are they still called seams?

End result: Clean and nice smelling air filters and a pissed of wife.

The machine is a bit slippery on the inside. The air filter oil which has coated the inside of the machine might decrease the overall friction and could potentially increase the dry spin revs to new record breaking numbers. I don?t think the oil goes well with the family white wash though.

I do however recommend at least 90 degrees Celsius ?White Wash? program. The 60 degrees ?Fast Colours? program wasn?t powerful enough to dissolve the oil.

Sir John is silly enough to be a Yank!

And,yes, a bonded seam is still a seam, or, if you want to get all techie-you can call it a Bond Line.

If you wash them by hand dont "wring" them out or you'll tear the seams.

While I never tried to wash my filters in the machines, I did buy a bundle of red rags and washed them.  Ruined several white frilly things when the grease stayed on the inside of the tub.  My wife prompty purchased a HUG bag of the rolls of blue disposable shop towels, and tossed all my remaining red rags.  When she notices I only have say 20 or 30 rolls of disposable blue shop towels remaining, she restocks the shelf.

I think I've been banned from the washer and dryer, as she also installed a lock on the laundry room door

Just face it, men are incompetent. I mean, a washing machine is a delicate piece of technology not to be handled by an inferior male!

I have just given up and my wife now takes care of the washing.

A tip; throw in something red in the white wash, preferably a new red sock or a t-shirt.

There used to be a place that would take your old dirty filters and send you clean ones,so you would start off with 5 filters, after you got them dirty you'd send them in and they would give you clean ones back. But I guess it didn't work because there out of business!
