how much is this worth
« on: March 05, 2009, 11:48:15 AM »
Can anyone give me a ballpark range on how much a 1986 KX500 is worth. It is in pieces but everything is there and it is in decent shape. I have no clue how much I can sell it for. Can anyone help me?

A 22 year old basket case dirt bike.......  I'd part it out on Ebay.

Really hard to say imo.
If its all there but needs everything overhauled maybe 200, everything there just reassemble maybe 800.
Just my .02
Likely worth more in parts.
Where are you located, that affects price too?

If you assembled it and rode it, it would be priceless as you would love all that power.

Haha, I don't think I could handle a 500, I'm 18 years old and my 125 gives me enough power. But heres the story.. My step dads brother gave me this bike in pieces and it was his sons bike. His son was in the middle of doing something to the motor but he was killed in a motorcycle accident. The cases on the motor are split but not taken all the way apart, I'm not sure if he was in the process of putting it back together or taking it apart? I live in Youngstown Ohio though to answer that question.

Get your self an Ebay account.  You'd probably have more money in it getting it to run than it's worth.

BTW......... Hello from sunny downtown Steubenville.

If the bike was given to you put it back together.  You will not loose from the experience, and knowledge you will learn when you work on it.  I am sure your step father's brother probably would like to see it run again too, probably bring back some good memories.

given this very saddening story..i wouldn,t want it just for that reason ,
but its for the same reason an item worth restoring and to be ridden on ...

Go for it. Restore it. You wont probably get what you spent on it when you decide to sell it. But K5 is a K5 and it always has some sentimental value.

The guy who gave it to you probably wants to see it running sometime.

Build it anyway, and enjoy it! When they are ready to hear what you did with it, they will ask. When they do, they might be pleased to hear that you had a passion that he had as well.

The story might be therapeutic for them in the future, just not now.
