89 kx250 front brakes , gas tank
« on: August 10, 2009, 10:56:53 AM »
its been a while but im back online , about a year ago i sold my beloved 98 kx250 thats pictured as my avatar photo . anyway i missed having a kawi so bad that i bought another kx250 2 days ago (1989) model i only paid $500 for it , it has rebuilt bottom and topend and it seems to run real good . My goal with the bike is to restore it to brand new or close to brand new condition  does anybody know where i can find the oem shroud graphics for the bike ?  Also i think i will need a gas tank or some advice on fixing the old one (threaded insert piece for shroud is fubared) . any input would be much appriciated . thanks

Make sure the current brass insert is not cross/threaded. If the threads are not cross threaded then this will help place less load on the insert once you start to thread the bolt in to it. Next is what I done and got 3 or more years of service from a spinning insert. Most all those inserts have a square flange that is molded into the tank. I removed about maybe 1/16  of inch of plastic all the way around the insert. A hobby knife works great just take your time. Cleaned with contact cleaner and let dry. Next fill the ditch around the insert with 271 loctite (red) till it's flush with the top of the insert, next thread in the shroud bolt until the insert starts to rotate. Work the insert back and forth, goal here is to work the red loctite in and around the square flange area. Let it dry for several days. Try it and good luck.

cool thanks for the input so far , i also was wondering what years are compatible as far as the body goes (seat , plastics )?  i am so glad i bought the bike its scary fast , powerband seems much snappier on this bike than my 98 . from this point on there will always be a green machine in my garage .  8-)

the 1988 kx 250 is pretty close to the same thing, a few minor changes, different size forks different shock etc. all kx 500's share the same overall design as the 89 so parts are pretty plentiful.

some say auto body shops can heat and pull and replace the inserts.
