Shipping a bike via UPS....
« on: November 19, 2003, 01:44:25 AM »
I have read that people ship bikes via UPS in 3 boxes.

Would somebody explain what exactly you have to do to do it?

Steps please....

I shipped a bike about 2 years ago this way w / UPS.
The bike has to be drained of all fluids Fuel, water & oil
You can leave the fluid in the forks and shock.
Remove f and r wheels, fork legs ( leave triple clamps on ) , seat , fenders,
shrouds & rads. , footpegs , bars, and swingarm.
First box will be the frame, engine and subframe. A good source for the box you need here is from a m/c dealer. Get one of the box / crates that new bikes are shipped in and cut it down to fit this section of the bike. You dont need a full on crate pallet underneath, just some 1" x ? bracing to support bottom of box. KTM boxes and wood have worked well for me. Some of the jap bikes are shipped in metal crates, not easy to work with.
Second box will need to be a long, square box for the forklegs, swingarm , fenders, bars, seat, rads. and other hardware that comes off in disassembly.
Third box will be large square box for wheels and possibly some plastic that might fit better in this box than the second box.
First box should weigh about 90-95lbs and will ship with an oversize charge.
Second box will weigh about 60-70lbs and should not be oversize.
Third box will also weigh about 60-70lbs and it may be oversize because of dimensions of box.
The costs will depend on how far you need to ship, my shipment ( 2 years ago) cost about $225.00
I hope this helps.
