**URGENT**

As of Tuesday, February 10th, 2009, the small powersports industry has all but been shut down. This affects not only dealers and new units but individuals all across the U.S. New and used units as well as parts avilability for every used unit in the nation has been called under question. This issue is far reaching not only financially but also concerning safety. With the suspension of proper sized ATV's and motorcycles suspended, young riders will be tempted to use improperly sized and built machines which could (but Lord willing won't) lead to severe injuries.

There is a waiver now setting before the Consumer Product Safety Commission in Washington DC, but has not been acted upon as of yet. We need every available rider, Mother, Father, Grandmother, Grandfather, Aunt, Uncle and any relative, friend neighbor, business or personal contact or any person who is a legal us citizen to get involved. They need to access this website, read the sample letter, type in their name and addresss then click the "send a letter on my behalf" icon below it. This will generate correspondence to all the committee members in Washington that are on the committee that oversee the commission that could act upon this. The commission members as well as my office will also receive copies of the letters set so we can be the most effective voice we that we can. The sport as well as the industry is in turmoil and time is short. The future of small powersports is at risk! PLEASE ACT NOW!!

Bump

This is the issue with lead paint, while it made sense for toys that toddlers could/did put in there mouths it doesn't make  sense to ban ATV's and motorcycles. I was at my dealers yesterday, he pulled his kdx 50, kx 60's and klx 110's off the showroom floor, which he was required to do by law.

Is this a regional deal? I went to my local dealer today and all the small bikes and atv's are still on the floor. I sent the letter anyways just in case it can help.

The issue is about principal, Its not about weather or not your kids are going to put their dirt bike in their mouth. It's about the A-holes sending us crap painted with paint we outlawed years ago for good reason. I have no problem being misserable if it's going to make some one else more misserable. If we have to suffer to teach these guys a leason about sending us tainted goods so be it. I promise you My kids will have bikes to ride, no matter what.

I wonder if the china made (knock off's) bikes/atv have caused this? I can't see the major manufactures using the lead paint. Either way it is dumb and I hope it gets turned around real quick.

I bought a brand new kick stand for my doughters honda 50 from honda. It came in a honda factory package it had a honda factory part number. When I pulled it out of the package it had a little gold sticker on the bottom that said made in china. when I installed it, it was to long and the bike wanted to fall over to the right side. I would like to use it to give who ever is in charge over there lead poisoning of the butt.

well, i saw a story last night on the local news about this ban on motorsports geared toward children. i wanted to check it out so i went to our honda dealer and indeed they have nothing on the showroom floor over a 100cc. no more kids bikes or atvs anymore. they cannot sell parts for these anymore either according to the news story. it's real sad that poloticians have to go overboard with every issue they come up with. my son is saving up money to buy his own dirtbike, i wonder now if he will ever be able to get a brand new one. the worst part of this is that kids will now be on bikes and atv's that are way too big for them and when they wreck it will be a really bad wreck vs. just a dust yourself off and get back on wreck from the little bikes/atvs. i hope that quality built machines will be exempt from this ban eventually. needless to say, my son is WAAAAAY dissappointed.                                      MADDOGGY

You know what would be cool if an American based manufacturer steped up to the plate and made some quality kids bikes.

The ban has to do with toxic paint that the bikes are painted with. This violates laws that we have in place for good reason. The bottom line is about not giveing bussiness to a country that is trying to harm us and are children. This is an out right attack on us and should not be tollerated. I guess some people just don't care as long as they benefit some how. Thats why we still see people buy gas from 7-11 even though the money all goes to a dictator that wants to do harm to the united states. He uses the money that americans spend on his gas to fight his war on us, but hey the gas is a couple cents cheaper then any where else some dumb asses keep buying it. Why should I care if china is sending us tainted goods painted with toxic paint as long as my kid has something to ride. RIGHT :-(

There is the assumption that this has to do with China, WRONG. Your American made autos have lead in them as well as many consumer items that you use daily, but since your over 12 years of age, no problem. This whole legislation has far reaching implications to not only foreign imports but domestic production as well. Agreed that children shouldn't be exposed to lead, but at 12 years old they shouldn't be putiing things in their mouths that don't belong there anyway, so why the ban on motorcycles and ATVs, our hondas and Kawis that we ride maybe next.

This ban has little or nothing to do with paint, Or the Chinese knock offs.
The Consumer Product safety commission has decided in all their grand wisdom that many components on a dirt bike or quad, may contain more than 600 parts per million as a percentage of lead content, like for instance batteries, or clutch packs, or? , Now granted this may be true, but they fail to realize that 99% of the repairs and maintenance fone on these vehicles is performed by adults. They also fail to take into consideration that most riders wear, gloves, goggles, healmets, boots and heavy pants or riding gear, to prevent injury, and as a bonus, protects the rider from incidental contact with lead. How many lead poisionings by dirt bike or quad have you ever heard of???
It is absolutely important that every rider,(yes, I already did) Writes his congressman, or representative and explain to them the safety factors, the economic issues and the total disregard for user input that was addresses when this decision was made. I know the manufacturers are sweating bullits and working hard to do something, but, It will take some loud voices from voters to be heard this time.
Step up and make the call or dsend an e mail to your congressman or rep! you can get their e mail addresses on the web!

That's wierd, everything I have read and been told by my local dealer says it has everything to do with lead paint. I also know for a fact that china is one of, if not the major offender. I'm not for the ban of motorcycles, I am in favor of smacking someone in the mouth if they are acting ignorant.  I'm pretty sure this whole thing is being done in order to get these manufacturers acting right.  I repaint and modify bikes all the time, why should I have to deal with lead paint? What about the poor guy at the meadia blaster who has to blast lead paint off of your motorcycle frame. Let me guess the lead paint isn't bad for me because I'm over twelve.

Brian,

I respect your point of view, it just isn't the same as mine, and thats ok. look at the big yellow iron you operate, do you think there's no lead in its paint? beyond that look at bb/pellet guns, a staple to most young boys growing up, can't have them any more because of the lead pellets, and how about fishing, yup can't let the kids use lead sinkers, and lets not forget most electronics, there is some solder in there, whether or not it's lead based is another question. No there's plenty of blame to go around, and what the law was designed to do was right, unfortunately the lawmakers got carried away.

by the way I'm not disagreeing that there are serious issues coming out of China, lead paint being one, how about the additive to baby formula, an who know what else. We can also talk about the peanut processors in the US, from what I've read its criminal.

just my thoughts

Don
