need help w/ yamaha atv

hey guys, i have a problem with my 89 yamaha warrior. it is cherry for it's age other than the fact that now it doesn't run. the last time it ran i rode it into my backyard to put it under the cover for the winter and as i was going to reverse it died. it was a chilly night and i figured i ran it out of gas. no big deal i thought, it was too cold to mess with it so i pushed it back into the parking spot. i decided to tinker with it the other day. new gas and it still would not start and found it has no spark. i would like to put in the garage and work on it but there is no space due to my baby (70 chevelle) lives in there full time. its too cold here in wyoming to be working on it outside so i'm beggin for suggestions as to what to check. it is not the kill switch, i have eliminated that. so i'm thinking maybe the  switch in the reverse lever assembly lost it's ground or the cdi or stator is bad. anyone have experience with this particular problem. BDI, i know you have an idea of what's causing this. i got the trouble shooting guide from the yamaha shop manual @ the local dealer but it didn't help. the book is wrong and shows the wrong wire colors for my year model. PLEASE HELP.

could it be something with bad connectors..been there done that :x
had rebuild my 2 liter dohc vauxhall engine ,wouldnt run proper..
been searching for weeks just to find a connector has been rotten ,
replaced it ,whoemmmm back on 4 cyl instead of 3


chevelle ,isn,t that the chevy chevelle,
the vauxhall /general motors model from europe ??
do you have a pic marty please?

MadDoggy,

I have seen the reverse switch on some of the ATVs cause a "No Spark" situation, the reverse switch was suppose to send a signal to the CDI, limiting RPM while in reverse. Check your manual and see how many lead wires are coming from the Reverse switch and check for continuity with a meter (Hopefully it is easily removed and note located at the shift drum as the one I had worked on). Wished I had more info to share, but hope this helps.

The stator is what goes bad on the warrior most of the time when there is no spark.I have replaced a few cdi's but on the warrior is is the stator most of the time.I have replaced many of these over the years on warriors motor4s and big bears.

i am working on my sons 2001 warrior right now. i know the guys at the red shop and they helped me test the stator and cdi box  was good.the spark is weak . tested the coil and it was good . think its a bad ground. also look at the back of the cdi and see if it has  melted a spot where it would be soft . also this bike a had a new stator on it tested it and the pulsar coil was bad when i bought it  .the rev grounds on the coil . clean the coil mount area . also my new spark plug cap was bad . good luck .

Try calling and talking to these guy's, I had a raptor 660 with no spark not to long ago and was not sure why. I called these guys and talked to their tech, he told me to unplug the big plug from the stator and check for spark. If it had spark that ment the stator was bad. I did, and it had spark :? the factory manual did not cover anything about this. They have awsome prices and they waranty their electronics (unherd of). I had trouble shot the the bike per the manual but was still not sure that it was the stator, I thought it was but I was second guessing myself because at yamaha prices I didn't want to be wrong. After talking to these guys I knew it was the stator and their prices are great to. http://www.rmstator.com/en/index.php

These guys even have KX500 stuff including complete wire harness for lighting.

 Had a buddy with a Blaster once that wouldn't start after installing a Motorcycle throttle. Long story short, there was a safety device of some kind in the throttle that killed the spark in the event of a hung slide I think. Took forever to figure out but was a simple fix. I know you didn't mention changing throttles, but thought that the safety switch in the throttle was worth mentioning.
