Need help, what did I do wrong?
« on: January 30, 2009, 11:33:01 AM »
I went riding last Saturday and it turned out to be a mud-fest.  After riding for 3 hours in thick, sticky mud, I put my 2003 KX125 in the back of the truck and went home.  I had a 1.5 hour ride home in freezing temperatures.  The mud dried out/froze on the way home and locked up the chain, rear wheel, and front wheel.  I took it to the car wash put the exhaust plug in and the air box plug in and proceeded to use the pressure washer to get the mud out.  I sprayed the whole bike, there was mud everywhere!  Today it will not start.  Did I possibly get something wet that I should not have?  Are there any precautions when using a pressure washer?  I removed the plugs and reinstalled the aircleaner, turned on the gas, tried using the choke...Need help.

Thanks

as for highpressure washing,
i have a few pointers:

never aim in the linkage system direct .
never blast in the wire exit @ ignition side
never blast under the tank ,there,s the bobine sitting

i say let yours dry thoroughly and give it a shot,
check for spark first ,then proceed

 Sub,
Freak is right. I was surprised at how easy it was to force water past the seals & connections.

I think I would start with the easiest things first.
Pull the plug and crank her over grounding the plug on the head.   Got Spark?   Smell fuel?
  Electrical or Fuel...
Check the kill switch, plug cap & wire, pull the seat and tank and check connections on CDI and Coil
( check mount for clean connection to frame and grounds. )  Flywheel cover , Water & Connections.

Check  the Vent lines for the carb are not plugged with mudd.. and pull the drain plug on the carb (17mm box I think)
how does the "little cup" in the bolt look?

Try that and lets see where are.

This may sound dumb but did you take the exhaust plug out??  I did that once (man did I feel dumb when a 5 year old kid asked me what that thing was in my pipe - after the 40th kick).  Cam.

I will try all the ideas this weekend.  It is supposed to be in the high 40's.  I really appreciate all of your help.

Sounds like you got some good advice, I have always been taught that although a PSI washer is the easiest way to get off the tough grime, that bikes and PSI washers are a bad mix. Not only can the pressure send water into cavities you never thought possible they can cause many electrical issues. not to mention push out the lube in your expensive O-ring chain.

Follow the sound advice already given for pressure washer use, and if I may add a couple of points. Unplug your electrical connections and air dry if you have compressed air, if you do not, you may use some moisture dispersing lube like wd40 to help dry them out. I like to use dielectric grease in these connectors it helps to keep moisture out, especially when riding in a particular wet area.

Some car washes use salts to soften the water and not leave spots in their spot free rinse. Over time this can cause corrosion and or speed up electrolysis between the dissimilar metals. So check those grounds as Friar stated check for spark and fuel and soon you will have music to your ears.
