hillclimber-
typically we build new bikes..as complete units.

occassionally I will be able to work with  a customer on as roller or conversion
in fact the site administrator danger4u2 has outlined his  08 KX500AF bike  in another thread , his bike was done in this fashion.
so it is something I can work with guys on.:)

I would ,of course, rather have a complete bike and am sure I would run into trouble with the beer budget approach. Its good to know that you work with customers in that way, though, and respect your suggestions. It just occured to me that I would want a stretched chrome-oly swingarm, and have a well maintained donor. I am sure that less is donored than I am aware of. How much of a donor bike is used?
I will check the thread from danger. Thanks for the info.

I see, looks like power plant only. Hmm. That makes sense too, about being conditional on the donor. Reputation is everything. Not alot of repeat customers, probably, just happy ones spreading the word.

Here's the story of my donor.
http://www.kxriders.com/forums/index.php/topic,4784.30.html
I went into my KX500AF with the understanding that my motor is just that, my motor.  I made sure it ran well before I pulled it from the 2001 donor bike.  In other words AJ made sure his components would start and run the motor.  Any tuning is on me.  So if it does not run well it should not and will not reflect on AJ or Service Honda as far as my bike is concerned.
If I had the coin I would pull the motors from my other 2 K5's and send them to AJ.  The green hubs sure look cool.

AJ, you use the 4 stroke radiators still, correct? I'm wondering if someone bought your hose kit to use the 200 degree re-route hose for pipe clearance, if the rest of the hoses would be usable on the 500 radiators. I'm wanting to build my hybrid out of an '04 250 chassis and use the 500 rads on it.

i use the KX450F , or KX250F rads

and they are heavily modded (hose barbs are all moved around ,etc)

no idea if it would work with th eKX 5 rads or placement on some
other chassis..??
maybe?

*shrugs*
