Jetting for Glamis?

Paul, What jetting shoud I use for Glamis? I have a 01 with reed spacer and the FMF Gnarly pipe.

My setup is:

178 Main
58 Pilot
3rd clip on needle
2 turns on airscrew

a 50:50 mix of 92 and Sunoco Purple (110 octane) which yeilds 101 octane mix. Run that 40:1 with Maxima Super M

Hell I don't know .

A safe rule of thumb is to go UP two main jet sizes to compensate for the harder working engine in the sand. The extra fuel / oil helps to keep the big-end bearing alive when you're on it constantly

32:1?!?!?! Are you TRYING to plug that thing up That is a carry over from the air cooled days. I've run my '01 (bought Dec '00) on 50:1 since brand new, except when I go to Glamis - 40:1 then.

You are right about the old air cooled bikes, just showing my age again! d**n I looked in my old YZ490 manual and the recommended 24:1 d**n that's almost straight oil! No wonder we fouled plugs!

When I bought the bike is was told to run 32:1, so that's what I have been using.

I used an octane booster in my YZ490 due to the high compression ratio and the detonation problem. Explain why you use the race gas mix.

Because the KX500 will run ok on lower octane BUT the engine - acording to my KX500 manual, you got one to i bet - is designed to run on atleast 95 octane and prefferable 98 and up. Run something over 100 octane and the bike will show you just how powerful it really is

Octane does not have any more power it ups the point at which the fuel will detonate under pressure on its own.

This is very true... HOWEVER, detonation is the enemy of performance.

An engine designed to run on 100 octane will run on 92 but not to it's potential. I understand that 100 octane will not make your Ugo run 150 miles an hour but it will make your KX500 run cooler, last longer and not have the serious detonation problem that you are going to encounter at Glamis under serious load.

I have seen so many post arguing about octane and how much more power it would give you!

You should read the post on YZ490.com when I sugested that using an octane boster would be a good idea! Its amazing what sets  people off!
