Service Honda buys all the parts and builds the KX500AF motor.

But yes find a bike in good shape, that's what I did.

It happens all the time, guys near my age (or any age for that matter), removed from dirtbikes,  think "I'll get back into dirtbikes".  They remembered (from 20 years ago)  the mighty KX500, went out and found one.  Found out they are not in the shape they used to be, or "it's way to much bike for me".  Then they parked them.  Lucky for me this older guy got scared the first outing and drained the tank/carb then parked the bike covered, in his hanger and forgot about it for 6 years.
He traded it in on a BMW street bike.  I bought it from the dealer when he advertised it on E- Bay.  Starting bid was $2995 or buy it now for $3500.  It had one bid when I saw it.  I did not wait around I called the dealer and picked it up that night in St. Louis for $3500.  I have a used 2003 in very good shape, I plan to pull the motor and have Stewart do his magic.  Then install it in the 2001 frame.  Use the 2003 chassis for parts.  The 2001 motor was sent to AJ and he installed it into a KX450F chassis.
Let me tell you the KX500AF is one bad a** bike.  All the power of the K5 with the handling of the new 2008 KX450F.  Does everything better.
Right now I know where there's a 2009 KTM 300 2 stroke for sale. E start turned street legal with only 60 miles on it. He's asking $1500 less than he's got into it.  I think he will have to go lower to sell it because winter is coming fast. He may have sold it, I was going to make a link to his craigslist ad but could not find it.
