02 KX500
« on: September 09, 2008, 02:45:59 PM »
Well I got my KX500 this past sunday. Its an 02 that is set up for woods riding. I traded my future brother inlaw my 92 DR435S for it, even up. He needed a commuter bike to get back and forth to work on. The 500 had seized and then broke free. I pulled the pipe for a quick look and I think I can get away with a piston and rings and a cleaning of the cylinder. Any suggestions as to what I can use to remove the aluminum that is smeared on the cylinder walls? I have heard of muratic acid but have never tried it. Its also registered and tagged. :-D It may see some street use after its sorted out. Maybe a dualsport kit is in its future!

the cyl. is coated but the stock coating comes off . you could send it to max power for thier chrome coating and it will last  a lot longer than the stock . if your going to put in a new piston you might as well spend a little more and do it right . you can take the alum out of the cyl. with scotchbrite ( green ) or 600 grit emery cloth. read on here about stewarts pistons he sells . make more power and last  longer than stock ( don't use stock) .good luck
race gas is fast but Q16 hauls azz.i still ride because i am not ready to have been that fast. i ride a kx500 because they don't make a kx600!ck k5abuser on youtube

Flyin,
Congrats on the 500.  I have used the green scotchbrite with good results.  Then give it a nice light crosshatch with some 400 emory by hand.  May not be high tech but it has always worked for me. Cam.
