First ride of the year on the wrong bike....Kinda!!
« on: January 05, 2009, 05:24:15 AM »
I just took my KX500 to Gorman, Ca on Saturday for my first ride of the year.  I was out with a buddy of mine and we had a blast.  It was a bit (alot) chilly but it was tolerable.  I didn't give a single thought while I loaded my 500 instead of my 250 that it had been snowing and raining at Gorman for a while.  :|  Every trail was either snowed up or a mud bog.  Kinda reminded me of the old Blackwater 100 days over in Davis, West Virginia.  The only thing that saved me is the fact that I have a flywheel weight and a Revlock clutch on my 5 hunnie otherwise it would have been a horrific day of riding.  It took a little work and finess but my good ol' 500 tractored its way around some of the tighter technical trails up there with style and grace.  Should I have taken my 250 instead?  Maybe.  But it was a good ride regardless.  Now its time to break out the preasure washer and attemp to blast my bike clean.  I'm sure there is still a KX hiding under all that mud.......  :-o

Were you in the OHV Park (Hungry Valley) and the trails there, or did you go up into the adjacent LPNF trails?

I only rode the Hungry Valley trails.  My buddy that was with me is still a bit of a newbie and is not ready for the Los Padres Nationl Forest trails.

The trails in LPNF are a bit easier to run if you start there rather than climb up from Gorman.  Have you tried staging at Chuchupate campground or off Lockwood road?  Your friend might find that the fire road from Chuchupate up to the peak is an easier intro to the trails.

If you plan to run the 5 hundred up there sometime, let me know.  I'd love to go back.
