KX500 vs. CRF450 drag race
« on: August 18, 2008, 07:54:55 AM »
I finally got my father-in-law to go riding with me this weekend.  I really wanted to see how his bike compared to the 500 in a straight drag race on asphalt.  His bike is a 06' crf450 with a FMF pipe, mine is a 01' kx500 with a FMF Gnarly pipe, everything else is stock on both bikes... airbox, reeds, gearing, etc.

On the first run we went from a dig.  I basically murdered him mainly due to the fact that I got a great holeshot.  1st and 2nd gear get absolutely no traction and by the time I hook up in 3rd I?ve pulled easily 4 bike lengths on him and still pulling hard.

Second run... we went from a slow 1st gear roll just to have a more fair start.  Spinning in 1st & 2nd bikes were almost dead even, I was maybe a foot ahead.  The second I clicked 3rd and got traction I jumped 2 bikes ahead, and ever gear after another 2+ lengths.  By the top of 5th I was at least 8 bikes ahead and still pulling.

Well have to do it again but have someone on the sidelines to tell for sure.  It?s a little sketchy trying to look back and make a distance judgment call while 5th gear pinned! What a rush!!! :-o

We ran a couple more time and all with the same outcome.  It was alot of fun; it?s a cool feeling to know you?re riding one of the fastest bikes out in the desert.  I have another friend with a 03' yzf450 that thinks its all fast.  Ill let you know that goes down when it does.

I have found there are many riders who are better and faster than me. But I have not come across any bikes faster than mine.
I expect the yzf 450  owner will be making big excuses why his new high tech four stroke got smoked by the old school antique KX500.
Glad to hear you are enjoying the bike.

I owned both and will guarantee that the KX will win every drag race.  The only place I have found that the 450 will pull the KX is in out of corner acceleration.  This is traction based not power however.  Cam

ps  It's funny how many time I hear guys complain of too much power on their 450's whereas I am always looking for more.

back in the mid 1990's i guess people decide the 500's were to powerful so they killed them and everyone rode 250's.  then we decided 250's wern't powerful enough so instead of making a 300 2t we went in a new direction with the 450 4t.  now they are compalining about needing more power with 450's so are we brining back 500's  :-D.  wishful thinking.  at some point 450's wil max out with there power capabilities and mods. it may or may not ever reach a stock 500 power but remeber its not fair to compare a highly modified 450 to a stock 500.  A 500 can be modified to always keep the edge in power.

ama can't get the displacment equivelant based on logic either so
everyone keeps compaing 2t to 4t instead of recognizing its a displacment debate. if all things are equal the 2t is better which is why the 4t have to run almost twice the displacment.

Thats the opposite of what the ama said??? :? ...they want the 4-strokes to be limited to 350cc becuase they said the 450's have become to powerful...the same way the 500cc 2-strokes did in the early 90's they say that because of the power only a few top riders can compete because they are the only ones who can somewhat keep control of the bikes and thus "kills the sport" for everybody else......you got to remember this is for closed course mx/sx competition not desert racing where you cruise at 100 mph for 2 hours..these guys are going balls out for 3 seconds then slamming on the brakes for 2 then going balls out again for 3 again.

and about the not having enough power or having too much power........when they first brought out the 450s they were a better match for 250cc two strokes but as they put some r&d into them they started to make alot more power and thats why they want to limit it back to put it back in competition with the 250cc 2-stroke.

the talk in europe is to go back to production bikes and do away with exotic factory bikes in the next few years and also drop them down to 350cc make the racing a damm lot closer.

to go on with bdi here, i know a few guys that have the crf 450 ,s and they said they found themselfs revving the s**t out of these 450,almost like it is a 500 smoker :|
this is indeed the lack off more hp they say.like kxcam says too.
comes by they are not intended for such abuse so maintenance also goes sky high with the revs
anyway these guys also say they desire the 500 power and maintainability
and for the 500 ,i know a whole bunch of offroaders-mx,ers sm,ers they alll say the kx500 is a scaring m.f#cker,
makes me feel like a retard with a death wish  :-D JOKE !
sinces i,m the only one around town riding them ...hard
