LOL! Reminds me of while out enjoying a small ride with the cousin and decided to pop the front tire over a puddle in the trial and just out of sheer stupidity and a little sand in the throttle (my excuse) I had it WFO a little too long and was pow-driven on my ass like hammer to nail funny thing. The bike managed the back flip without touching the rear fender or silencer on the ground. Good laugh and I remember the pain like it was yesterday.

I didn't really do a back flip, I just flipped my bike.  Low speed, just to much throttle.  Ruptured my patella tendon.  Had the tendon regrafted to the bone Dec. 16/04.  Then I had to have a second procedure on March 25/05.  They put me to sleep and physically manipulated my knee to break up the scar tissue.  13 months off work.  15 months with a physical therapist 3 times a week.  2 1/2 months after I got hurt we had a warm day in late February, my brother came over and asked if I had anyone start the bike.  I hadn't so he got it out and started it.  Like an idiot I had to ride it.  I didn't get hurt but when I let the clutch out I knew I should not be on a bike.  Turned around and let my brother ride it.  A few days later he was over and he let it slip to the step daughter I was a sissy and he had to start my bike for me.  I got in big time trouble with the wife because I told her I would not try to ride any of the bikes.  Especially the KX 500.  So I made a promise to her that I would not ride the KX until I could kick start it my self.  2 months after the 2nd operation I started trying to start the K5.  I could not do a full kick.  Every day I would try.  After 3 months I still could not do a full kick.  But I kept after it.  It took 9 months but I was able to start it.  Now I can kick down Ok but have trouble lifting my leg up high enough to get my foot on the starter.  It's best if I have something to stand on with my left foot.
I got long winded here but if a new K5 owner reads this and thinks twice before riding and does not get hurt then it was worth all the typing.  It all came down to throttle control.  I still have fun on my bike but I don't do the crazy stuff I used to.
My Doctor and Therapist didn't think I would go as far as I did on regaining the use of my leg and knee.  They were hoping I would be able to bend my knee 90 degrees.  I went way beyond that.  I can bend it about 115 to 120 degrees.

deep respect for the way you persisted on kickin the big 500,
it reads like a painfull ,long, long fight that you,ve delivered .
i,ve been in the same sort of pain ,when i had my megacrash 15 years ago.
smacked into a nissan patrol with 35mph,shredded my upperleg and elbow into 67,9 pieces .
took a whole year just to get back on the feet ,
and i,m also suffering chronic afterpains ever since,
cracking elbow noises and sa tiff leg ,so stiff i have too lay down to get it relaxed again.
can,t stand longer then 10 min without the stiffness striking my leg.
can,t run hard for long distances. but hey were not complaining here ,im so glad to be able to ride again !

Was the Nissan Patrol damaged ?? Just kidding, I am glad you guys are able to heal and ride more.  The KX500 is a bike to be respected, it does require throttle control, and some discipline.  John
PS Danger, hope you heal all the way and can walk without a limp.

Danger, are you using an Asterisk Cell?  How do you like it?  I had a guy ,who races, tell me he wore out an Asterisk brace in a year.

At the time of purchase my budget was not up to par.  I wanted something so I bought Alpinestars Bionic SX Knee Protectors.  Not the best but way better than nothing.  They move around until I have my MX boots on.  I don't wear them all the time and I should.  Now that the temps are coming down I wear all my protective gear.
