Here's a quick tip. If you race (or trail ride in well used areas), looking to the right can help you find a smoother trail.
The majority of human are right handed. As a result, as a the trail begins to deteriorate in a race (choppy, ruts, etc.), the faster riders will begin to natuarally drift to the right in search of smoother trail. Since most of us are not in the "faster rider" category, looking to the right can reveal a new trail that provides for smoother sailing.
Next time your in a race and the trail starts getting ugly, look to the right and I'll bet you find a better trail on which to ride.
