KX 250 vs 500 suspension
« on: August 05, 2008, 12:23:32 PM »

Assuming we are referring to the same year bikes (2001), is there any difference between the forks on these bikes?

I know they are both KYB's and both 46mm. My question is other then the caliper mount, is there any difference?

I'm putting together the 250/500 hybrid right now and i'm debating which set of forks to have rebuilt. I'm going to send either set I do off to have them fully done (valving, springs, rebuild) but the 250's forks are in far worse condition. If they are the same internally i'll just have the 500's redone keep the front end just as it is and swap it into the 250's trees.

I've not looked at a 2001 kx 250, but my brother had a 2000 kx250, and it certainly had a different axle mount than my 500.

yea, it has a different axle mount and caliper / mount for sure.

I guess I was more looking for internals.

I would suggest using the 250 components. Main reason is that on the 500 they stopped development back in around 1998 or so.  On the 250 development has never stopped. On the outside they may look the same but the 250 suspension will be better internally where it counts and will make a far better starting point for the guy revalving them. Cam.
