I think that theyll be around for a while, just not as many. KTM is commited to 2ts. They are supposed to have a clean burning 2t in the works. I believe it involves direct injection. Kawasaki had a 2t watercraft out a few years ago with direct injection and it was cleaner than the 4t wc. It was dropped because it was pricier than a comparative 4t wc so it didnt sell. Honda raced a clean burning 2t in the Baja 1000 about 8-10 years ago. If I remember right, it was a 400cc CR based bike. The technology is out there.
A couple of 03 and 04 KXs, a few YZs, 3 PE 400s, a DR and a TS.

when i go to mx alot of the 4 strokes smell like they are burning engine oil or do they loose it somewhere else , so if all them 4 strokes are burning 20 to 40 mils whats the diff . they are still creating the dreaded pollution.

i dont think the magazines are helping all the time but they are getting better.  seems that when they compare 2t to 4t's its always about power and torque so the 4t win shootouts but when they compare say a 250f to a 450f they say handling is what is important.  even when mxa compared a 250 2t to a 250f it was almost like ignore power and go with handling.  seems biased.  i have seen other blogs with people comparing laps times and all the bikes have about same lap time regarless of size and 2t or 4t.  its the rider obviously.   If that is true then they should focus more on cost and ease of maintenance which leads to 2t.    when 4t first came out it was hard for people to adapt.  now its hard for them to adapt to 2t.

Also ama rules for 150 2t vs 250 4t and 285 2t vs 450 4t are arbitary and not based on true horspower/torque equivalents so they are bent towards 4t.  seems at one time people thought 500 2t were too powerfull so we killed them and then we wanted more power so instead of partnering with ama and mfg and making a 300 2t we went in different direction and created a 4t which was heavier, more expensive and harder to maintain.  now it maybe to late to fix.  the 2t vs 4t debate is not about which is better; the 2t is better which is why more displacment 4t are allowed.  it is a debate on what is proper displacment size.

yes many thanks to ktm.  they seem to be only mfg that gets the displacment debate by offering consumers a 150 and 300 2t.  i bought a 300 and love it but will always keep my kx500 for when i need the monster power.
