Enduroize a KX250
« on: June 17, 2008, 02:22:32 AM »
I need some help from the porting guys.  I am considering building a KX250 for my wife to ride.  The goal is get her a bike that has decent suspension and is as light as posssible but has lots of bottom end power.  I was looking at a KDX220 but it is still fairly heavy and there are none around.  I can take my pick of many KX250's. The detuning is fairly easy but I was looking for how to pump up the bottom end and remove the top end hit.  Obiously a FWW is in order first thing.  Is milling and lowering the barrel a good option?  Thanks. Cam.

I might be able to help. My girlfriend has been racing 03 and 04 KX250s in enduros for a while now. She's a B level enduro rider and competes in the B250 class. She ended up second last year against the guys. Out of the 03 and 04 250s, the 04 is much better off of the bottom. It has a smoother transition into the midrange and maybe a bit more over rev. We havent ported it and feel it doesnt need it. She has a 11oz fww, a Pro Circuit 296 silencer, this smoothed it out and seemed to add a touch more on the bottom. She also has a V Force reed cage. The stock pipe seems to work best for her In comparison, her 03 has similar mods but realy lacks bottom end. Its not so noticeable in the more open terrain but very noticeable in the rocky, hilly enduros that we race in PA and NY. It has to be ridden pretty aggresively there. We both run 13/51 gearing, I race a 04 also, 13/52 on the 03. Our terrain ranges from extremely tight southern NJ woods to very hilly, rocky PA and NY woods. You can also pre load the power valve governor spring with washers, this pretty much takes away any big hit that it may have. Also, depending on your wifes height, you may want to lower her suspension properly. Not the lowering link, slide the forks up way, but by sending it off to a reputable co. and have them revalve and lower the suspenders. My girlfriend did it and will not go back to the stock height suspension. Hers was lowered 1" and it made a huge differance. She is much more confident riding it. I almost forgot, in 05, Kawasaki changed the engine completely and they are supposed to have a more violent power delivery, she bought a new 07 last year but hasnt ridden it yet. It still has the protective plastic all over it. She will probably start tinkering with it at the end of this season.
A couple of 03 and 04 KXs, a few YZs, 3 PE 400s, a DR and a TS.

Thanks for the info.  I would definately have to lower it, likely 3".  I never considered messing with the power valve but I can see how it could really help. Thanks. Cam.

kdx200
easy to start, luggs through all the hills, just an all around easy cruser, great for first time girls or even better for more exp. girls that can get on the pipe.

i have an 91 kdx200 all of my girlfriends have ridden hardly ever stalls even in the tight woods,  with little to no clutch action. just a great bike. they are around and you can get one for under a grand in good condition.

kdx200 is the way to go with the wifey, if she starts gettin on the pipe then get her a 250 and tame it down a bit and she if she'll like it? she'll love the kdx

just my 2 cents

Another vote for the KDX.  If you want better suspension and ergos, there's alot of info out there to do a hybrid KX125 chassis with a KDX engine.

One of my 2K 250's has the stock pipe with minimal hit.  The other has a PC Works pipe with a somewhat larger hit, but it's not off/on like a 125.

FWW would be a must for either bike IMO.  You could also shave the seat.
