my new transplant project
« on: March 20, 2008, 07:45:19 AM »
 :-D

So I had to start a new thread here as I just picked up a '89 KX5hundy engine, CDI, pipe, carb and misc crap to start my transplant into a 2001 KX 250 frame.  This will be a longer build as I still have 2 trips planned before I can tear down my 250.

My plan (in no particular order)
- Get the engine mounted, swingarm shaved and mounted
- get the frame bead blasted
- make a new headstay
- weld up all of the incomplete welds from the factory, gusset the frame
- powder coat (dont know what color yet, I will be running white plastics)
- Port and polish the head, new piston/ rings
- figure out the pipe situation
- figure out the clearance issues with my desert tank

That will be a good start anyway.

Here is my starting point.

And mods I already have on the bike:
Pro taper tall bars, W.E.R. steering damper, Boyesen rad valve, 3.2 Ga IMS desert tank, ARC levers, DID O-ring chain, and suspension done by Fineline here in Huntington Beach.

Stupidity should hurt!

Hey! Sweet looking 01! Did you find out the clearance issues with the 500 motor and oversize tank? Like to know if you did.

Great project, hope you get it done soon. Will you port and polish the head yourself ?

I'm stripping down my 5hundy this weekend.

Engine is going to the machine shop hopefully next week to get the rear mount bored out and the swing arm narrowed. I've got all the parts stocked up for the 250 build. Now i have a couple extra sets of forks and shocks too.

KXer: looks like you are in So.Cal. Is that true? Maybe we can compare notes on our junk as we do it.

Yo KXer.. after I heal-up from this broken clavicle situation... we'll need to go for some rides man!

I'm over in EastGate Park in West Garden Grove.

P.S.  I'd be very interested in throwin' a leg over that bad boy once you have it dialed-in.  I've been wondering what one of these would be like in a newer frame.  Being as they are mondo bad-ass already! ;)
