Stuart,
By your description it sounds like the float chanber is filling with fuel and the overflowing. For that to happen the float and needle is not stopping the flow of fuel. Sounds like your float needle has some dirt lodged in it, or is worn out. If yout take the float bowl off and have a look you should find the problem. Inspect the rubber needle tip and make sure that there is NO groove, otherwise replace the needle. Hope this helps. Cam.

hi thanks for that, seemed like the problem was that i not used the bike in a bit and the float was sticking, a gentle tap with a screwdriver handle on the side of the carb stopped the problem just needed loosening up i guess! would the fuel overflowing stop the bike from starting? maybe it needs a good run out to blast the cobwebs out so to speak!

If your float was gummed up then your pilot jet might be as well. That will prevent it from starting. If you leave your bike unridden for extended periods, I always find it is a good practise to put fuel stabilizer in your fuel mix each time you fill your gas can up. That way you can leave it for extended periods with no issues. I have a bunch of small engines at home so I run fuel stabilizer always in all my gas cans so that I don't have to winterize them all. Hope this helps. Cam.
