First off.... ALAN! When are you guys heading to Glamis?

Secondly.. If anyone going to Glamis would like a flywheel weight, I have an extra (came on my racer) and will be willing to drag it to Glamis and unload for $75. I've got everything that came with it including the stickers

Paul, I will be there riding Friday 14 and Saturday 15th November! I still want you to take a ride on my monster Ditchpickle!

Pardon me for the stupid question and I know I can go back and read old posts to find out what the Fly wheel weights will do for me!  I may be interested if you convince me I need them! :D

I had a dream last night there was 20 KX500 all jumping over a big dune at Glamis at the crest in sequential order! It was awesome and they were all electric green!

Alan :D

PS I will be packin my helmet cam! :D

Alan, it smooths the hit and makes it more managable. Lessens wheel spin, and acts like the thumpers engine brake when you let off the gas. I have two bikes, a racer without the flywheel weight and a "trail bike" - yeah right  - with a flywheel weight.

If all that you saw were electric green then you didn't see my racer, it's BLACK & WHITE

Ya know, I resisted the urge to slap on a flywheel weight for several years, even though a lot of the competition had seen the light.  However, earlier this year, I was setting up a bike for an older friend of mine, and suggested a flywheel weight because of the improved starting attributes.  As a side benefit, I got to slap it on my bike for a few week.   Wow, what a difference!  It never came off my bike, as we just purchased another weight for the original intended user.

After more than 6 months of lots of riding, I consider it a must for most KX500 riders.  Add the other basic changes noted else where on this site, and you have bike that is a true joy to ride.....

Somebody else here recommended a 10 oz one I believe...

Easier starting? Nice.

Just so I'm clear on this what size flywheel weight do you recommend.  Secondly, does the flywheel weight have an ill effect on the crank bearing or seals?  I question the life expectancy of mine.  Should the crank be trued or balanced (not sure of the correct terminology) before adding the weight.  Thanks.  Excellent post.

The only weight available for the KX5 is a Steahly 14 oz. unit. it does not have any ill effects on the bearing/seals, primarily because the unit is balanced and as such creates no additional load on said bearings. You do not have to have the crank assy balanced, but if you do, your 500 will have less vibes than most stock 250's! Hope this helps.

Im not sure but the 10oz was for an older mid 80's k5,14oz is what Steahly sells but Im sure I read in there catalog for a price they'll make it lighter or a custom heavier one.

Don't opt to have the flywheel  lightened.  I run a 14/45 in the trees for tight technical riding, and with the flywheel, have no problems with the bike dying.

You will not regret the addition...
