KX5 Parts Availability- HOW GOOD/HOW BAD????
« on: February 13, 2008, 08:19:18 PM »
Hi  guys,

I'm seriously  considering one of two  KX500's,both are w/c's- 1994 and 2000 vintage.
How much internal pieces are still available through dealers nowadays for either of these?
I'm concerned because I'm used to Honda's great parts support system, and a chum
who happens to manage a K dealership sez 'there ain't no comparison, dude,Kawi's
are sad..." d**n,hope he's wrong....

What has been your experience when buying a piston,con-rod,clutch plates, etc?

Thanks,

Sam in Indiana

I get parts for my '97 alright. It when you need something like triple clamps, cases, cranks stuff like that where you have trouble. Honda does seem to have better parts available for older models. Its not hard to get bearrings or clutches, but can be tricky to get some things like the clutch hub, i think. The guys on this site can get alot of parts, otherwise hard to find.
The 2000 should be in better condition, right? I'm sure you can get the parts to keep them running for awhile either way. You can give up on going to the dealership for in-stock parts though. With this site, after market sites, and ebay the k5 will be around for at least another 10 years (IMO).

I think that by law they have to build parts for 10 years.  Since the 2004 (last KX500) is essentialy the same as the 1990, most parts should be available for quite some time.  Cam.

OK,thanks guys....as there were 50+ reads and no replies,I began to think the KX5 mill just might be 'maintance free'....wow,the CR5 ain't that good....
Good to hear from two of the senior members on this subjct,as I'm after 'the real facts'
about parts for the KX5....don't want opinions, want experiences... you know.
The '94 is in fact ultra clean...enough so that I'm not at all concerned about it's age.
I'm concerned only about the mechanical/cosmetic condition, not the age....

Thanks again,
