You need a "special" tool to hold the clutch backet in place while you remove the nut.

I made a tool out of one of the plates that I wasn't going to use again.

I don't have a pic but it is fairly easy to build one.  I have also used a strap type oil filter wrench before but if you are going to keep the bike I would make one up.

You have to hold the inner hub so that you can remove the nut.

1. I've seen it done with a pair of special vice-grips that are for welding (I think). They ARE NOT "Clamped Down" on the hub. They have these long fingers (Kinda like a spanner set) that allow you to CAREFULLY hold the hub via the cogs...once again...NOT BY CLAMPING; But, by "Holding" the hub by it's teeth...kinda like circlip pliars are used on your countershaft sprocket retainer...but "Reversed" in application...(Expand v. Contract).

2. Take one of the steel/al. plates and make a holding tool by welding/bolting/rivetting on a handle.

3. Stuff a bunch of rags between the inner/outer hubs and use an air-wrench...again...CAREFULLY!

I've seen all of these methods done...of-course, the aforementioned "Special Tool" is great. Especially if you find one!

A picture Of the "special tool" as mentioned by Husqvarna, is in this .pdf document and I will scan a pic of the "special tool" mentioned in the factory KX500 manual and post it tomorrow if need be.

Those "special tools" must be more common than I thought. Huh!

Kawasaki part no. for that tool is 57001-1243. Cheaper and quicker to make one out of a couple of metal clutch plates by attaching a handle as stated in the above messages.

Yes I know, I made one out of a couple of the old plates that I took out of my bike when I was rebuilding it.

The Link was to show the "special tool" that someone thought I should be  about mentioning. There is a pic in the .pdf that shows a tool, that looks as if it was made out of some clutch plates to show people that are not very mechanically inclined or inventive, what it looks like.

If I had a digital camera, I would have put a pic, in the pic gallery of a few that I have made but I do not have one. Also to say that I have nothing to be embarassed about by calling it a "special tool".

I was impying the the "Special Tool" will make you    if you have to wait for one to be ordered. That's all.

I didn't think you'd want to wait for a week or so to get your clutch off.

Good Luck,

Manny

That clutch basket is not real strong, so I have never felt comfortable tring to use the fingers for any holding at all.  Instead, I use a piece of wood and place it between the crank gear and clutch basket gear.  These are stong gears, and the wood will absorb stress by making indents in the wood.  You can use a socket and bar or better yet, I use a 1/2" impact to spin the nut off and on.

I have used an Air Impact to get this nut off on every single bike I've ever owned without any problems, just hold it with your hands or something soft. I am wondering if it is not such a smart way.

I use impact gun as well. Never had any problem with dissasembly, but the nut needs to be torqued to, I think 58 foot pounds, I don't have my manual in the house and you need something to keep the basket from spinning while you torque it down. Aluminum anything, "wheels, heads, etc.", have very specific torque settings because it expands and compresses and does things that steel will not.

Wedge a COPPER penny between the crank gear and the clutch basket gear. Old pennies are copper, newer ones are copper plated zinc. Copper is softer than the gears and wont hurt the teeth. Ballsy, but it works...
