on New Years day in South Dakota they use to have a race on the frozen Sioux river. Its was a 50yr old race 17 yrs ago when I ran it. they called it a Hare and Hound race. the Hare (usually 2 fast riders) get a 20 minute head start. then the mass start riders head out. the first to catch the hare wins. but the hare's will take detours up little creeks and put a number on the detour. If you catch the hare and have no numbers your going to lose to the the guy that took the detours and has the numbers. river racing is fast so its easy to miss the detours.
