110LL Avgas in a KX500
« on: November 22, 2007, 09:41:45 AM »
Hey Guys,
Newbie here, live in BC own my 2nd KX500 (an '89), getting a strip down this winter, followed by 17" rubber and a couple of other bits in Supermoto guize.
I also ride an '03 CR250 and an '02 GSXR600 track bike.
Anyway, Hi from BC and I look forward to the banter  with y'all

Oh one other thing, does anyone have experience of running a KX5 on 110LL Avgas, either neat or blended?
I'me interested in the gains vs losses, risks, jetting, pitfalls etc.
Thanks guys

You would be better off with 100 oct on a stock motor. If you go to high on oct for your compression level you will make less power. Be careful It sounds like the k-5 is the fastest bike you got  :-D
Smoke every cigarette like It's your last and ride like you stole something!!!

BTW, I'm running Castrol A747 (A caster oil) I get from the UK as "I Believe" it's un-available in North America.....Unless someone knows a suppier here. It's what I've always used in my 2smokes in the UK and swear by it. Mind you, with shipping it works out at nearly $50 per litre :x

The experts all agree running AV gas in powersports applications is a no-no. AV gas is very "dry" and doesnt have adequate lubrication properties like conventional race fuels such as VP, CAM II and Sunoco...
VP C12 or CAM II is the best all around race fuel for high comp. 2 strokes.

I run maxima Super M @ 40:1 with 100octane Avgas and have had zero problems. I have been running this since i purchased the bike new in 2000. My cylinder is still within spec. On my 3rd Piston and ring set. It's proof that what the experts say about avgas is wrong.

I've run season after season at the dunes and raced season after season in Whiplash with that and never had a problem. The only time I've ever had a problem was running Castor 927 - rings and power valves all gummed up. Yuk...

Alright Steve, looks like you're going to have a lot better choice of spares now you know its an 89 bike instead of an 86 as you had thought at first.
Also if you have a look in Gallery theres a few pages out of a steel framed 250 with 500 engine conversion that I scanned in and e-mailed to Alan, he bunged them in togallery to help me out as I am a numpty and was having problems

I can e-mail it to you if you can't find it there and would have mentioned it if I knew yours was an 89 bike.

Regards Scott.

Polar-Bus is right on this, think about the altitude airplains run at. at these altitudes the oxygen is very limited, so they oxygenate the fuel to make the engine run more lean.

a lean motorcycle engine doesnt last very long.
