For really steep hills try to make your speed at the bottom and ride on the balls of your feet so you can dig your heels in as you get your head over your fender.  Does this make sense? I may not be communicating this clearly, but you must be able to dig your heels into the hill so to speak.

Check out this video of a hill that does not seem that difficult.

When you throw rocks ruts and sand/silt into the mix it really changes things.  Oh and dont forget the dust.  It's a national race so the first guys through are factory sponsored and make it look nice and easy.

Here is the same race but the intermediate line.

Notice the first guy who is standing with his head over the fender and getting jolted around like a ragdoll.  In my limited experience I find that hills with rocks require a more rearward position so you can get the front wheel off the ground and over the rocks as much as possible.  If that means you have to sit down then so be it.

And this last one is just a nice little potpourri of desert stuff including a GP drag strip.  GP's include moto, asphalt and offroad all in one race.
