The criminals in are prisons are hard workers to for very much the same reason, they don't have much of a choice otherwise. I was mad on halloween when I found out that I had to toss all of the kids fake teeth because they were painted with lead paint. And the nuke thing I dont mean that, I watched a show on what we did to japan nuclear war is a bad deal but I'm sure that it is not far off for us if iran gets their way.

i've always wondered why the USA does not require each country to import an equal amount of USA goods as they import into our country. seems right to me! as far as the lead stuff goes the chinese manufacturers are just cheap s.o.b's. the lead based paint must be cheap. they don't care what their kids play with, if it causes a death in a chinese kid they figure"who cares?", we have millions more kids to take their place. did you know that the target number of mining deaths in china per year is in the thousands? can you believe that crap? target should be zero deaths. that right there proves that the chinese government doesn't give a d**n about thier own people, so they dang sure don't give a rats a** about our kids. i could go on and on. I think the Chinese are us a hundred years ago, we didn't know about lead paint and the impact on humans. I spent some time in China, the people I met were super nice and very considerate. I would walk down a dark street in China way before I'd walk down a lighted street in Jamacia, that place scares the crap out of me. I think the media has a tendency of swaying public opinion in the direction they choose, I'm sure overseas media portrays americans as something we're not, or at least most of us aren't.  As with any society there are good honorable  people, and there are scumbags, I mean heck we have them in our own country. off the soapbox, thats my .02

It's funny that we all of the sudden have this problem. Do you think we are so stupid that we have been buying toys from china for years and years and we just now found out they are using lead paint or do you think they just now started using lead paint because they hate us. The people over their in the factories use what is given to them they have no controle over that aspect. Their government controles everything to do with those factories and the people in them are clueless. You think their government don't know lead is bad? maybe they think nuclear bombs are just really big safe and sane fire works.

the thing about Chinese manufacturing is that it is up to the company purchasing from them to decide what standards to uphold. the company I work for right now was buying a only from the us. Germany and France. but they have been moving to china and here is an example why

one item we sell are red bottle racks for cleaning products. we had them made in the us for about 15 years but more and more frequently they arrived damaged, smashed and or with the paint flaking off. the colors never matched and we saw many inconsistencies. after formal requesting the manufacture to improve the product many times we had to make a change. we tried many manufactures bt the Chinese were the most consistent and least expensive. the standard of the goods were up to us to decide, the Chinese can make lots of crap or quality merchandise.

we now do not see any of these items damaged, and the quality has improved over the US made units

think about this - compare the guy making them in the US, he works for a large company making good money (decently making more then I do creating a retail department in a catalogue company) and I can grantee that the china man is more motivated. he does not have unions backing him if he make a mistake he is out of work and there are too many people and not enough jobs. in the us, however, there are many jobs so the worker .

I was an intern at Boeing for 2 years, 8 out of 10 of the employees worked maybe a half hour wile on the clock for 8. don?t get me wrong there are many good workers in these environments and I am all for the idea of unions but it is a balancing act and businesses need to stay  in business.

i will go out of my way to buy american made products if i can. if the quality is good then i will buy USA made goods, and i don't even mind paying extra money for them. at least i know the $ is going to someone who pays taxes here and makes some kind of contribution to this country. MADDOGGY

BDI, your right, the government of China does know that lead paint is bad for you, but I'd bet the people working in the factories, who are mostly un-educated don't. I would agree, the government of China doesn't give a sh*t about the common man, or the US. The problem with a communist state, you political views are whatever the government tells you they are, whethere you agree or not. I don't think we can hold the people of China accountable for government policy, in the US there are many people that don't agree with our government, should they be held accountable for what our government does?

I to try to buy "Made in the USA" products as well, and if we want to send a real message, then we need to stop buying from China.

Walking through a store, such as a harbor freight, you see alot of products that say made in China and you wonder who would buy that crap, it looks as if it were used once it would break. Having spent time there I can tell you that they use that crap, and while alot of it does break, they fix it and move on.

I don't blame the people at all, I feel sorry for them. You know I thought I would throw away all the toys made in China and only buy toys for my kids that were not made in China but my kids would have no toys.

I remember not too long ago, when WAL-MART onl sold items made in the USA. then Daddy Sam Walton died. and along with him so did that mentality and integrity. when it comes to what Americans buy, it must be considered what is available to buy. the average American is living paycheck to paycheck, as many of us are no doubt. and after the rent or house payment, utilities, groceries, ever increasing gasoline prices, and trying to squeeze some kind of fun into your life, the money left for buying goods like tools, toys, and hoards of cheap disposable motorcycles, lamps, furniture, you name it shrinks by the day. the idea of American pride in craftsmanship is mostly a myth anymore, save a few that hold ontothe skills and knowledge that is quickly dwindlingfrom active memory. how many kids do you know in their teens that are learning a skill, taking up the family business, orkeeping our rich, proud heritage alive? when I think of where we have come from since the end of WW2, its both amazing, as well as sad. we were the premiere of production, inginuity, and raw @$$ backbone in the world. and while technology and biology are ever building the possibilities on hand for human kind, we have lost something.

it comes down to this....WE ARE A CONSUMER SOCIETY. and we will consume the most we can for as little as possible. enter China...producing as much as they can, for as little as possible.
