I am looking at purchasing this 04 kx250f.Been doin a little reading on it and it says you have to drain the coolant before changin the oil filter. Is this true guys. Can you change just the oil without drainin the coolant. Not sure how it works.
I am anxious to test this bike ride it(before i buy it)because it has an athena 290cc big bore kit in it.Anyone rode one of these, let me know.

I had an 04 250f, it was a good bike but had some first year issues, mostly valve problems, or more precisely the valve springs were to weak. I would think the previous owner would have had that problem taken care of by now. As to your oil filter issue, in stock form you did have to drain the coolant to change the filter, they changed the design in 05, you can purchase a aftermarket coolant cover/oil filter cover, in fact I've seen many on ebay. I wouldn't let that bother me, maybe it's been changed already, or you can change it.

Always keep a clean airfilter, change the oil, and most of all make sure the valves are adjusted properly. If you follow those three simple things it will run for along time.

Good luck

Don

I ride the yellow version for 4 year now. Great bike and had minor problems. Mostly my own fould.
Change the valve springs with every piston change. You gain 1 horse over old springs.
13front 50 rear sprocket works the best, than you can ride it like a mini 450 in third and fourth gear al time. 175 or 178 main. Boyeson waterpomp/oilfiltercover. I ride 2 races and change oil, with 2 oil changes a filter. Always use Kendall 5w50, same viscosity used by KRT (Kawasaki Racing Team MX).
Have FUN with that ride( or test ride)

Dutchie,

You change valve springs every Piston? seems like it would get kinda expensive, how often do you change pistons? I change 2-3 times a year. I install the Pro Circuit valve springs when new, ride it a year and get rid of it. My 450 I'm going to keep for 2 years, the 07 has 3 HP more than the 08

Use GSX-R 1000 springs there the same!!!!!!!!!! Cost ?110,- for 4 springs if I'm right.
With stock cams you don't need special springs. OM cost ?70,- for 4 springs.
Lot cheaper horse:buck ratio than exhaust and garantie of no valve spring failler. Blown up is much more.
Changed pisten every 20 maybe 25 hour.

Newer bike arren't always better. With Cr 125 even Plano Honda used 95 and older cilinder in 99!

I didn't know about the GSXr valve springs, excellent tip. Any particular year or they all the same? I run the Wiesco High compression piston in my 250f, do you run stock or one of the other brands?

I rode the bike and was very impressed. With the 290cc kit in it it pulled my 210 pound frame around very well, very close to my 07 kx250 but with that sweet fourstroke power.I dont motocross just ride in the bush, race the odd harescramble for fun, except when a friend passes me then it is on lol.Besides the 290 kit,it has new kibblewhite stainless steel valves, hotrods rod kit,new head, complete bearing replacement(swing arm, linkage, wheel bearings) and much more. Its really tight and looks great too.I bought the bike and am in the process of makin it my own.It doesny have the new water oil pump cover tho.Is boyesen the only outfit who makes this cover?I am sure it will be a pain in the arse to drain the coolant every filter change.Fairly new too fourstrokes tho so what oil should i be running and how often should i b changing it(lots i presume).

There many manufacturers of water/filter covers.
I don't no if there is a special year for the GSX-R springs, race shop just have's them.
I also run KTM footpege, my org. were worn and the KTM are wider and cheaper. Only the kickstarter hits the on the wrong place. We have had bad luck with aftermarket pistons. Burning up oil, strange ware. Stock pistons no probleme, even with Pro Circuit cams.

Suzuki gave all dutch 04 RMZ 250 larger radiators. With stock I didn't had problems, ran a 1.6 radiatorgap. Later used for safty the lager radiators plus 1.6 gap.
Run Idle speed at 3000rpm for easy starting and les engine braking.

Has anyone put a flywheel weight on these 250f's.Just wondering what weight a person should put on.For the bush you have have to be quick on the clutch hand.Would a flywheel weight hurt the power of this small bike too much r could i get away with some weight.I guess the other alternative would be an auto clutch.
By the way with the 290 kit in this bike it makes a potent offroad scoot, very impressed.

There is a big differens between 04 and 05 kxf(06rmz) in crank and flywheel.
The 04 has a heavyer or lighter flywheel, but crank and flywheel togeather weihgt the same. And you can't switch 04 by 05.

Chap: do your run 50T on the rear, or is this to small for bush ride??
