KX500 w/ late model kx250 subframe
« on: October 03, 2007, 08:49:22 AM »

I'm wondering if anyone has played with fitting a late model kx250 rear subframe to hang newer style plastics on.

I can tell you It's going to be more work than it sounds like. the first big problem that comes to mind is the exhaust. I would just do the 250  rear fender mod and call It a day.

hmm if its just the mounting thats an easy fix, if it needs to be rerouted there will need to be some fab work done. I was planning a tear down, clean up and rebuild of my 99 this summer anyway. Maybe i'll pick up a subframe and play around.

I considered what you are talking about doing at one time. I even got a 250 subframe to try and mock it up, after I was done scratching my head and waying my options this is how I decided to put the 250 subframe on my 500. The rerouting of the pipe is the hardest part of putting the 500 engine in a 250 If you have the gusto to do that you might as well go all the way.

P.S. I'm not saying It can't be done. I will put a V-8 in a moped if someone says It can't be done. I just don't think It ways out on the cool versus effort scale.

If your just using the swingarm, then the only gain would be the rear fender. The seat probably wouldn't mount to a 500 tank, the 250 uses a perimeter frame so to use the tank and newer shrouds would require modifying the frame. Then when your completed you have a 500 with new style plastic, the suspension is still the same.

I bought a Rocket Science frame kit for my 500, what I ended up with was a 500 that looked cool but didn't handle any better, I sold it and built my first 250/500, much better handling.

I wouldn't want to discourage you, but I would suggest that upgrading to the newer chassis may ultimately make you happier with the bike.
