85 till 87 KX500 questions
« on: September 30, 2007, 08:03:17 AM »
hey guys

i have one in mind for a small price like 350 euro,s or so
but i don,t know anything about the 85kx500

i have the models 91/94 and the older ones are totaly different.
my question is:
is there anyone with an 85/86 who can tell me the week spots,

such as gearbox or head/valve/crank or mountingissues or stuff thats wearing out fast /cracking or else?

the one i want has a good nice piston not worn out
gearbox is working fine,
only an electric issue ,since there is no spark

but that is no problemo at it,s self ,
since i know how too fix that

i really hope someone from the older riders could give me some feedback on this 85ers
or anyone with a 85KX500 at least

w.k.r
menno

o i did use search but nothing relevant came up..

The 85 motor is a somewhat different animal, it is the first year for water cooling, and kind of a lone duck. 86 on had powervalves, cylinders are interchangeable from 86-88 then from 89 on. The clutch was a weak issue, they had a coarser spline and only 5 springs. I use the newer bottom ends and have some motors with the 86-88 cylinder and head, the problem with this combo, you can't buy the power valve parts, they have been obsoleted, there may be other parts as well.

The motor made alot of horsepower for the chassis.

My 86 KX 250 had a factory kickstand. I think 86 was the last year for the kickstand.
A couple of 03 and 04 KXs, a few YZs, 3 PE 400s, a DR and a TS.
