Two bikes... To merge or not to merge?
« on: July 20, 2007, 11:16:46 AM »
I recently picked up a couple KXs, a '93 KX125 and a '91 KX500.
The 125 was free and I just spent $600.00 getting the chassis/suspension back in shape after some years of neglect. Thinking I would find a 250 motor in the near future...
Then I found the 500 for $750. It's suspension is hammered from years of playing in the dunes.
As I see it my options are:

1-keep both bikes (find that 250 motor this winter) and rebuild the 500 to the condition it deserves.
-OR-
2-Swap the 500 engine into the (now tight) 125/250 chassis.

I have seen a number of 250/500 swaps for the 99+ chassis but not really for the earlier chassis. Is there a reason for this? Steel swing arm?
What are some opinions on chassis geometry? Is the 125 stable at speeds of 100mph +? With billet triples/steering dampner? Does the Hybrid make for a better all around bike?
We have logging roads and trails around seattle. Would I be restricted to drag racing on gravel roads or would this make for a sick woods weapon too?

I am 5-9, 185lbs and not afraid of a handful, I just don't want something that only has bragging rights because of HP.

Thanks for your help.

The KX125 would be a sick woods weapon with the 500 in there. Get a good low/mid port job and make sure the jetting is spot on, gear it down.. it would have plenty of grunt for the woods.

The size of the KX500 is a little harder to fit in the 125 chassis from what I hear, haven't done it so I don't rightly know. I would imagine its not much harder then putting it in the 250 except the pipe will have less room to fit.

I say merge them and sell off what you don't use or at least thats what I'd do.

From reading only, someone mentioned on here that the 125's radiators are not big enough and would be alot of effort into mounting big enough ones on there. How many bikes are you riding? I have two at this point and really like the idea of a choice when loading up for some fun. Also, if one is needing some repairs, you're not left at home. My vote is for two bikes.

Can a moderator move this to the correct board (general I think)? Or doI have to cut//paste and re-post?

BTW thank you both for your opinions. Il ike the idea of each scenario so I am still up in the air...

Aparently I forgot to mention the KX500 purchase to the GF  and she noticed yesterday there were 2 bikes on the trailer instead of one. That went over well - LOL! So her vote is Hybrid and sell the extra parts.

Please do not get mad but this Is my opinion a 93 bike Is not worth the effort of the swap a newer kx500 Is probably a better allaround bike than a 93 125 or 250 and It would be far easier to upgrade your 500 to new 500 speck If I were going to stick a 500 engine In a different chassis It would have to be enough of an upgrade to make It worth the effort. Thats just my two cent's sorry for being a scrooge. Hows about this for a idea put the 500 engine aside and part out the two bikes you have and then buy a newer 250 or 450 sell what you don't need from that bike and take your 500 engine and build your new bike. But If she Is already mad about you buying two bikes this Is probably going to make you single.

LOL! I would be thin skinned if I asked for opinions and got pissed. Outside opinions are what I'm lookig for.

But yes I would possibly be out on my ass...
Another fact is that I just dropped a bit of $$ & time into the KX125. And then there is waiting for everything to sell and be W/O a ride in the mean time.

I figure I would be into both bikes less than $2k if I kept them both or about flush (other than labor spent) if:

A) I rebuild the KX500
or
B) Create a hybrid and part the KX500
