First Bike for Women
« on: July 08, 2007, 10:00:22 AM »
What do you guys think about getting girlfriends and wives riding? My girlfriend wants to ride and I have some really mixed feelings about it. Especially wondering which bike is ideal for a starter bike. She's 5 foot, 100 lbs, so no way is she gonna be able to handle my 250. The prospect of anyone riding my 500 gives me chills, and I am hesitant to even trail her on it. I am considering a 4 stroke around 100 cc. I also think a slow bike for at least a season, but have not done much shopping in this department. What do your wives and gf's ride. XR's, Big wheel 80's, quads, or what?

Z-Rod's wife rides with us when we dual-sport ride.  There are about 4-6 women that ride the big dual-sport meet in Sept./Oct. at Clayton Oklahoma.  Here's some pic's...     http://www.okdualsport.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=136
Pam rides a Kawasaki Sherpa,  they don't make them any more, I think they were 200 cc 4 strokes.  2 of the women ride Suzuki  DR 400's.

Hillclimb,

Couple of my ridin buddies have been going starter bike for wife thing over the past few months.  One bought a used 05 crf150 and the other a ttr125.  They been tagging along at the motocross track riding on the pee wee and vintage tracks at practice.  Made alot of progress riding 1-2 days/week over past few months.

Good luck getting them hooked on riding, the more the better

My girlfriend rides a 04 KX 250 2 stroke that we had lowered 1" by WER or Works Enduro Riders. She competes in the B 250 class and is currently in 2nd. Her little 13 year old sister, 5'1", rides a KLX 125L big wheel (DRZ 125). The KLX/DRZ 125 would be a great first bike for your girlfriend. There is also a small wheel version of the KLX/DRZ. :-D
A couple of 03 and 04 KXs, a few YZs, 3 PE 400s, a DR and a TS.

agree with the KLX125L, its medium stature, good power, though not screamin. the L has the front disc brake.  my 14 yo daughter rides 1 and has a blast on it. its not too tall and doesn't throw her off the back. and ya, the Kawi and the Suzi are the same bike so which ever you get the better deal on you can make green if you wanna....PEACE

I think the most important thing is that her leg reach the ground while she is setting on it! Secondly not to powerful!

Thanks guys. Klx sounds good. I'm a little prejudice against Suz@#$, i'm surprised the DRZ is the same bike. :x I know brakes are interchangeable between mfg's and therefore sometimes wheels. Someone would have to give me something yellow after owning an RM. I have been looking at CRF's and TT's also. Trying to stay away from another Egay basket-case, but have little resource for slow bikes at the hilllclimbs. I actually think she will only ride a putter for the rest of this season, so I'm trying to get a good deal for resale purposes also. First time I'm working a resale angle also. Any other ideas on sources other than Egay or any auction tips?

Thanks, spider that is a great link with some good tips. I have considered most of those points, but haven't had them applied to specific models or mfg's. Very good to know seat heights and to see that I'm not the only one putting the effort into getting the bike and rider sync'd up. She's already hooked, but wants to be trailed all the time. She's ready for me to take her up hills and go over jumps. She also wants to race, so I guess that puts her into the aggressive/ stubborn category. :-D

My first thought was a TTR or KLX 125.  Smooth power easy to ride, plenty of parts available.  If she wants to race, you may want too look at KTM's 105.  It has more low end then the 85, but can still be a handful for a beginner.

It comes down to what type of riding she plans on doing.  If its trail riding, I'd go TTR / KLX, if its racing, give the KTM a look.

Let us know what you go with.

The KLX , TT or Crf and possibly a DRZ (for real cheap) all sound good. I have my ear to the ground and keeping an eye on EBAY and now Craigs list. Of course KTM's have awesome bikes, but probably too fast and too expensive. I would like to stay under a grand, (hopefully) mainly because of funds, but also because of resale. You guys rock on advice on here. Thanks again everyone. I will let you know what she winds up on.

CRF150 if you want to get max resale out of it. Great bikes and a big demand for them amoung the youth. :-D

If it makes you feel any better my g/f learned to ride on a TRX300 4x4 quad then learned clutch work on my modded 250 (pinger) trike and will be riding the KX500 powered version when its complete.  :-)
